Jaws Opens It's Mouth On Xbox

Majesco today announced that it has secured the interactive entertainment rights to Jaws. The game is currently in development at Appaloosa, the developer behind the Ecco the Dolphin series - not quite the same ferocity as Jaws, but you get the picture - lots of water, lots of fish and a couple of humans - probably.

The game is slated for a release in summer 2005 on Playstation2 and Xbox to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the film’s theatrical release, and pits players in the role of the infamous great white shark driven to a predacious frenzy by the sonic emulations of an underwater drilling rig. To defend their territory, players undertake a campaign to drive the raiders away whilst solving a number of action-based puzzles designed to thwart the player.

The game will utilise an enhanced game engine that was previously used in both Sole Predator and the Playstation2/Dreamcast versions of Ecco the Dolphin, which results in stunning underwater visuals and realistic physics that enable the great white to perform a variety of leaping, twisting, assaults, thus rendering havens such as dive platforms and boats vulnerable to attack.

"Without a doubt, Jaws is one of the most revered classics of all time. The film's mixture of action, adventure and suspense terrified the masses," said Jesse Sutton, chief executive officer of Majesco. "The game will capture that same action and excitement as the movie, but this time, the shark enjoys some pay-back."

"Jaws was an instant hit, a phenomenon, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike," said Bill Kispert, vice president of Interactive at Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. "It was an adrenaline-charged experience. With Jaws, the game, we want to give players that same adrenaline rush as they control the power and the fury of a Great White."

Sounds pretty good, I always thought Xbox was missing a shark game.

@()$*)(^)#(@&)#(*&@#)(*!^)#(&*^ I use to be Head of this Games Division for a small company - Vega Electronics - and I pitched the idea of a shark game because we wanted a game that would stand out so it would be easier to market. And look at this... a shark game. Unbelievable.
