Update [New Video at Xbox.com]
Ending weeks of speculation about which upcoming video game platform will give gamers the most bang for their buck, today at the German Games Convention, Microsoft Corp. revealed that consumers can get their hands on Xbox 360™ — the most powerful and feature-packed next-generation video game and entertainment system — for as little as $299.99 U.S./€299.99/£209.99 starting this holiday season. For gamers who want to experience the ultimate digital entertainment thrill ride, Microsoft also announced a model with hundreds of dollars worth of accessories for $399.99 U.S./€399.99/£279.99, giving consumers the definitive entertainment experience at an unbelievable value right out of the box.

The Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Core System — along with an impressive lineup of high-definition game titles from the world’s best publishers and developers — will make their debut in North America, Europe and Japan in time for this Christmas holiday, several months ahead of the competition. Although details for the Japan launch will be addressed at the Tokyo Game Show in September, the unprecedented three-region launch signifies an industry first. The Xbox 360 platform will deliver the most powerful console, the best games, the next generation of the Xbox Live® service, and amazing digital entertainment experiences never seen in console entertainment. “The sheer entertainment value of Xbox 360 cannot be overstated,” said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft. “While the system has the muscle to power awe-inspiring graphics, audio and online play, it’s also got the intelligence to serve as a one-of-a-kind entertainment device that plays CDs, DVDs, MP3s and digital content from an array of devices, including portable music players and digital cameras.”

With its built-in Ethernet port and free Silver level of service right out of the box, Xbox 360 also connects players to Xbox Live, the premier global online console games and entertainment network. With Xbox Live, gamers can chat with friends online, build and share gamer profiles, send and receive text and voice messages, and access Xbox Live Marketplace for new content such as game demos, trailers and casual games from Xbox Live Arcade. Subscribers to the Gold level of service will also enjoy access to online multiplayer gaming in their favorite games, as well as great promotional programs such as worldwide tournaments, the chance to play online with their favorite celebrities, and opportunities to win big prizes.

WOW!. I cannot wait to get my grubby little hands on that sexy machine. The only gripe I have is that why do they keep using composite cables for HDTV? Why not use true HD cable like DVI or HDMI. Much better quality and alot less cables. But besides that....oops. I wet my pants thinking about it again.

Everything the Xbox 1 did right microsoft is screwing up this time, if the hard drive isn't standard out of the box equipment for all Xbox 360's it might as well not be there for anyone because developers wont use it for anything other than MAYBE a game save option, wellcome back memory cards, guess we didn't buy enough of them for Xbox 1. And the price point for the "GOOD" bundle is way to high, look at the history of consoles that launched at over $299.99 US. You can find them by searching google for "failed consoles".

I hate Sony, so now what do I do? Guess I'm out of gaming for this round, at lease until Microsoft does some scrambling to fix this mess about 6 months after launch...

Not to mention the whole DVD-ROM at launch, HD-DVD later with no plan for the early addopters to get the up grade rendering Microsofts most loyal fans screwed again? Remember the first Xboxes with the Thompson drive then later the vastly superior Panasonic and even more superior Samsung drives...

This is a huge let down... 99.99 USD bucks for a wireless adapter, 62 for a control and battery pak... come off it... what a huge let down the only thing the 360 had going for it was that the HDD was going to be standard... this is a shovel full of BS from MS....

Love how they include the 20 dollar face plate... come on that is like buying a car and saying the hood is included....come off it...

Sorry MS you lost a customer...

Come on guys, you only pay $100 more then the original xbox. $399 full packackages for a next generation console is a steal. I'm so excited about this. Just think about it. This is a next gen console with highend new technologies you are buying, not an old school obsolete type of sysytem. I'm not blaming them for charging $100 more, I know I will enjoy and experiencing all the new technologies they put into it, and the games I'm sure will be stunning looking or at least better then the old school consoles like xbox, ps2, I won't be surprise if it's even better then the ps3. If you still think it's too expensive, maybe you're behind in technology.

Seriously wtf, all everyone does is complain and complain (the price is to high, the Hard Drive isn't standard etc....) I mean if they gave this system away for free you jerkoffs would find something to complain about. Next when they do confirm the games are going to be $59.99 you'll start complaining about that. Join Gamefly and rent them for a monthly fee if you do not want to spend all that money on 1 game. You really thought this system was going to be fully loaded at a price tag of $299.99, give me a break. The PS3 (STANDARD) is projected to cost $400.00-$450.00!!! Screw backwards compatibility too. I do not want to play my old Xbox games on a system that's supposed to be the Future of Gaming. I'll rev up my old Xbox to play those games again. Here is a theory for all you people complaining about the $399.99 price tag:

    Opition 1:
If you already have it reserved go to gamestop, eb games or wherever and put down the $10.00-$20.00 each week, every other week etc until it launches in November. (Assuming it does) That way you final balance will be smaller and oh NO you maybe able to afford that game you wanted too!!!

    Opition 2:
Open up a savings account at your nearest bank. Continue to deposit as much money as you can up until the 360's release. When the day comes take the money out and buy your new Xbox360...

Holy shit it's a miracle, you can honestly afford this system!!!!

Two questions.....how does the silver package that comes in the box work.....and second will the games be less quality since MS told game developers to create games with the possibilty of not all people owning a hard drive?

And lastly to people like NeedTheBox and all that....I do agree with saving up the money and all of that but where our opinions differ is about people "complaining". Well if they origionally said that there would be a hard drive and especially there would be a WIRELESS CONTROLLER with every STANDARD package, it is kinda of a slap in the face that the lower priced console doesnt have both of these PROMISED things. Yes the Premium is a way better buy....isnt one of the main reasons for getting the xbox360 over the ps3 the price.......but anyway a promise is your word and in this case microsoft didnt keep its full word......

PS: Premium is still a really good price though considering what you get with it

    EDS,

As a consumer can you really trust a company's promise? As soon as I heard that I knew it was bs. No way would they be able to make a profit or gain market shares in the Console Market by doing giving you all that at a list price of $299.99. Half of these people that write on this board do not look at it from a logic standpoint. The premium package is clearly geared towards Hardcore gamers. The standard is for people who want to enjoy the Next-Gen console without all the other perks. The games will not be less quaility as the same core processor etc, will be the same in each version of the Xbox 360. The harddrive is clearly to enjoy mp3's, movie clips things of that nature. The silver package allows you to communicate with friends over Live, voice chat, text messaging but does not allow you to play your games over the Xbox Live network. If you already have an Xbox Live account then you will just need to re-enter all your info into your new Xbox360. (Your membership continues, you do not have to pay a dime till your old membership expires.)

Nah, the XBL service shouldnt been included period, it couldve cut the cost of the better buy. It shouldve stayed separate from everything else, like it was for the fIrst Xbox. However this does seem like a mixed bag of chips to me. You have good things with this bundle ,but it wouldnt make sense to get it if you got the other one and bought stuff for it,or vice versa. Its sorta like building a PC. However, if you can get over the fact that you would need the Hard Disc for the XBL Silver stuff and loads of other junk, its still at its heart a gaming machine and I dont feel like its a TOTAL letdown. So if you add up your chips. it would seem that I would plunk the change down for a Hard Disc IF i went with the core system. The core system shouldve costed about $200(USD), its a more cosumer friendly price, but apparently we didnt make the machine. The HD/VGA AV cable opens the possibility to play Xbox360 games on our kool PC monitors and flat panel LCD screens with VGA hookup. Whomever talks trash about XBL not being free obviously never had it....they just shouldnt have included XBL in a package..it has enough stuff by itself to run up the price. I more than likely will miss the launch of the system, but I could possibly end up getting the Premium Edition Xbox. But not having the HD standard wasnt a bright idea, whomever idea it was.

PS. Project: I think that both the DS and PSP costs a little more than $50 bucks dude.

So basically the $400 version comes with everything we have expected, and the $300 version comes with a nice package of dissapointment. I hope MS knows what they are doing by making that 20 gig hard drive an accessory....but since when is a 20 gig hard drive $100? Should I even ask what the 40 gig will cost? COME ON!!

Well, I think the $400 package is going for the hardcore games, while the cheaper ones are going for the frst time video game players, or just casual owners. They hope that eventually they will want to upgrade anyway, so they will eventually buy all of the accessories.

Just a way for Microsoft to make more money. Hopefully that transfers into amazing features, and better games. Go 360

You can find them by searching google for "failed consoles".
but in the uk we've had to pay £299.99, which back when the xbox and ps2 were released was about $450, and £279.99 is $505.47, considerably more than $399.99, so don't feel so let down. we have to deal with this every 4 years.

For the good bundle here in Canada it is 486.00 a controller with bater pak works out to 75 bucks and that is all without taxes don't for get them it is 15% PST/GST here... so mates
No HDD Standard witch is the best thing it had going for it and I am really pissed it is not there... I will not get the 360... my money will go to Sony and Nintendo... I have an Xbox and over 50 games... but it is to much money for to little... come off it 99.99 USD for a wireless adapter that is 135 here with taxes...

MS mess up large and they will pay for it... sorry this system is too weak for the price...

Are HD-AV cable compatable with STDV? I don't have a HDTV, but I want the xbox360 and a hard drive. If I had to get a $299.99 console then, and a $100 HD, that would leave me at the premium price without the extra accessories. I think MS should have made a core console with the hard drive and without live accessories at about $339.99. I'm not planning on using Live, so all the excess accessories don't really make the premium package a good deal to me. Someone please answer my question about HD AV cables

I was going to buy it, I was the first person in my city to buy an xbox. I had to buy another because my crappy dvd-drive died. I have 82 games i counted yesterday. I don't want to give my money to sony or nintendo so I am going to wait this console war out possibly.

LOL@Project.........just as long as you got Nintendogs for DS..lol No offense taken dude, I feel most frustration here is building up against MS for not making the 'core' system with a smaller HD hard disc. That was rather stupid IMO. 8GB's was enough for the first Xbox, why didnt they just charge $299 for a simple system with a smaller HDD. Peter Moore guys....dont listen to him, listen to J Allard.

your absolutely right that the 400 dollar comes with a lot more than 100 dollars worth of xtras, but is the price of the xtras really what the price should be? not for me, the controller shoudnt be 50 it should be 40 tops, the HD cables should allready of @!*%en with it since they are so proud of HD on the 360, the HDD is of course not worth 100, and what really pushes my buttons is the wireless network crap, that shoudlnt be 100, microsoft knows this, why do you think microsoft is soooooo confident on the 400 dollar models, because the fraeaken memory card will have to be baughten anyways making you spend around the same price, but the point is that they have now striped down the 360 to make two versions which is BS. but i guess you cant do anything about it, im still getting the 400. hopefully you guys get that also. hopefully its a great system though

It isnt about the cost of the system. People want to KNOW for a fact that the game features are not going to suck because 5% of the broke ass gamers didnt want to shell out for a HD. They should have either had one price point or 2 with both having a HD..... It is as simple as that......

    About the HD issue...

We are gamers, and that mean that we pay $1200 for a couple of video cards, $1000 for the fastest CPU (at least for one month...), huge HD tv's and, of course, $400 for a console with a hard drive.

We don't want the second best, we want the state of the art in everything asociated with electronic entretainment.

The thing is, though, that we are just not enough.

MS has made it point clear about reaching bigger audiences, and this is just perfect in order to achieve that.

First, for the people worried about caching, it's not big deal, I mean programers are smart enough to manage that. A hard drive is detected, Great, let's do some caching! No HD detected... well youll have to wait... BIG DEAL!!!

And about that other features... IRRELEVANT!!!

    Why?

Because the core system is not aimed to gamers, is not for us, is for the casual gamer, the one who sees a new gadget and buy it, the one who is worried about its expenses, the one who is entering in the gaming world, the one who doesn't have enough money and will get the HD later, the one whose parents say "400 is too much for a videogame".

This people are going to see the graphics, the price, the games, the price, the expandibility and the price, and are much likely to give the 360 a try. Period. They won't care about the missing features or the longer loading times, at least in the beggining. Eventually, they will want to improve their experience and buy the hd, suscribe to Live! etc, etc, etc.

So they do that to atack a new market, a market who evnetually will become like us, gamers.

And then the PS3 arrives, MS drops the prices, and the (now) gamer will prefer to invest on upgrading his core system... because he is now into it.

And the other causal gamer will choose again the cheaper system for $199... and the cycle continues...

Regarding the hard disk of 20 gig for $99,99. It's not that simple. It seems to be a special disk. 2.5" and with some special features. The disk has all kinds of special adaptations to collect little sound and doesn't need cooling . Also the housing and connector are different.

I just got off the phone with Gamestop in Hackensack, NJ where I preordered my Xbox360. The girl said if you are in the FIRST SHIPMENT (which I am WOO HOOO) you will have the opition to buy the $399.99 version, if you want the $299.99 version you must wait an extra week. SHE ALSO SAID AND I QUOTE!!! "The Premium Edition Xbox360 will be fully backwards compatibly. The Standard Xbox360 WILL NOT!!!"

    Was anyone else told this?

I can't pay extra adding things. Microsoft is stupid and worst now than before. They should all fire people and hire new officer work at new Microsoft. That too much price. Xbox 360 should include with harddrive, remote, wirelss controller, headset, etcs with one sku $ 249 or 299 at launch. I praying not this news is true. They are dumb idea and stink!!!!!!!!!!!!1

If I had a choice between this and the 299 package everyone expected i'd gladly pay for this, and I think it's smart for Microsoft to sell a couple cheaper bundles ( the premium is actually the standard package) for single working parents and working kids to still get a system and upgrade later! Some of ya'll will bitch about anything, y don't u start saving now and go get u a ps3 when it comes out next christmas and stop crying like bi@#he$

ok this is how i see it, The premium package is for the people that want action right away notice all of the accessories that came with it "ethernet Cable" and the "wireless headset" you get those right out of the box all u need now is a 12 month subscription to the live and a game or two and your set!!

(notice how great it is without even mentioning hard drive"

the original box cost nearly $400 to make, so I can understand M$ not wanting to subsidize billions of dollars a second time around(in fact they will probably be glad when they can discontinue the financial albatross for ever),

however since the unit will use DVD9 instead of HDDVD OR BLUE RAY, the inclusion of a standard hard drive would have kept the playing field more even with the PS3 when it hits the market,.. developers could have used it to stream content and pack more content into the games. now most developers will be limiting the potential of their games because they'll want to sell games to the broadest market.(but with 512k you'll hardly notice)

$400 is what was expected prior to E3, before premature leaks encouraged the expectation of a $300 price point for everything, (even though it's ridiculous for any company to provide the tech that the X360 will contain for a mere $300 at launch)

and M$ allowed the perception to persist that the box would be $300 for everything,..

this sort of move divides the market and confuses the customer because it conflicts with much of the initial info that was publicized about the 360 during E3. things would have worked out better for M$ if they had simply kept their mouths shut (like Sony is doing now) rather than presenting one expectation, but actually providing another.

on the positive side it does allow people with limited funds to ease into the box, yet on the otherhand deprives hardcore gamers and developers the option of using the HD for games utilizing greater content and streaming options(like Bethesdas rph)

I also suspect that M$ will begin using XBL to sell game levels (episodic content) directly from the servers, expect to hear more about this by mid 2006 if not before. It's a fact that M$ is currently supporting telephone titan SBC to invest in new internet technology that will enable SBC tol provide much speedier connections,an internet phone service, and cable tv. (look out Time Warner)

M$ has also contracted with a company to sell it's more popular pc games (like AGE OF EMPIRES) over the web, (but you can only play while connected).

the cost of the original xbox was so heavily subsidized by M$ it should have called it " videogame welfare"(and issued "gamestamps"). now M$ seems to be making the decision to squeeze some ducketts out of it's newest entry in the next gen console market so ultimately who can blame them. so just buy one, save your tips, and get an HD later.

Let me say that the intial news and pricing of the 360 threw everyone into a frenzy. You have to say though MS is making an effort in every which way and form to make sure US the consumer is happy with whichever version of 360 we purchase come launch time. I mean if it is true that the games are $49.99 hell that alone is freakin steal. I know I blew up in a few of my earlier posts so I apologize to you my fellow Xbox Freaks. Just know as that PS3 comes closer to launching that MS is going to shove it up Sony's ass and lower the price of system and accessories to what will be the #1 Gaming System in the console market. Patience my friends, this is just the start. How sick Half-Life 2 & Far Cry on my Xbox 360 with my HD-TV with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound...J. Allard your still a genius in my BOOK!!!

    What does everyone else think?

Just you wait til the ps3 comes out, you will see MS stars to drop the price. Maybe $299 for the premium, $199 for the core system. So everything will be alright. Either you want to get this now or wait until the price drop. I think MS doing this intentionally, so that they can compete with the ps3. I think Sony is playing right into MS trap. I will say this again, as soon as the Sony PS3 comes out, MS will slap Sony in the face with a price drop. You see, after all, I don't think it's a bad move by MS. They may have made some consumers very angry now about this HD thing, but in a long run it's going to be good for everybody.

If you still have xbox live membership now, you won't lose that. I heard that all you need to do is log in your old gametage and your personal info into the new machine, you're ready to go.

If you have an xbox live accout, your x360 will recognize the account when you connect it. ..yes,...it's that simple.(according to robbie back, j allared, and steve balmer)

*premium is the only way to go. getting the core system and buying each peripherals piece by piece is like buying all your furniture from a "rent-to-own" store.

when the original xbox was released the bungie bundle was $400, (halo, a couple of controllers, the dvd remote, and some game called mad dash or wacked or something like that)

the premium box will still be cheaper than the ps3, and ps3 still won't have a uniform online solution that will match XBL. when the ps2 released their hard drive, it was virtually useless, I mean how often have you heard of downloadable content or games that let you play ripped music on the ps2.

if there is a market adoption rate of at least %60 out of say 5-7 million users, you'll see more developers add more harddrive related features to thier games plus a heap of downloadable content. and we'll be previewing whole game levels like you do now off the web for pc games. cool.

For all those who are complaining about the 360 that is selling for 399.99, when Microsoft brought out the 360 at E3 2005 in May, yes they said that it was going to come with the HDD, and the wireless controller, they didn't say anything about price. So if you think about it and quit bitchin, you are actually getting more than what they said.

To all the price complainers: You're idiots. Look at the prices and what you got/get with each console at launch.

    Xbox - $300:
    Console
    - CPU: Pentium III (733MHz, 128MB Cache)
    - GPU: Nvidia NV2A (233MHz clock, 64 MB memory)
    - Memory: 64MB SDRAM (200MHz)
    - DVD Drive: Thompson P.O.S. (That should be the actual item name)
    - HDD: 10GB
    Ugly, Big, P.O.S. Controller
    Basic A/V Cord
    Power Cord

    Xbox 360 Premium - $400:
    Console
    - CPU: (times three) Custom IBM PowerPC (3.2GHz, 1MB Cache)... and there's 2 threads per core so effectively you have 6 processors.
    - GPU: Custom ATI GPU (500MHz clock, 10MB memory... mooches off the system memory)
    - Memory: 512MB GDDR3 RAM (700MHz)
    - DVD Drive: Something alot better than a Thompson-type drive. I think they learned they're lesson when using shitty parts. (See all Xbox versions 1.0)
    - HDD: 20GB
    - USB ports: Three USB 2.0 ports
Wireless Controller w/ built in Communicator
    Xbox Headset
    Remote
    HD A/V Cord
Power Cord (Xbox 360 exclusive... not that basic universal one on Xbox)
    Xbox Live Membership
    Faceplate(s)

Things you would need to get for the Xbox to get close to matching the Xbox 360 accessory-wise: S Controller ($30), Headset/Communicator/XBL 12-Month Sub. ($70), Remote ($30), S-Video A/V Pack ($20)... total = $150.

I didn't even mention getting another 10GB HDD or a new $100+ DVD drive (and/or repair costs) after the Thompson failed.

So you 13+ times more processing power, a wicked sweet graphics card, endless accessory features for (guesstimate) $150 - $200 less. This is all when stuff is so much more expensive now days.

WTF are you all bitching about exactly? I'm seriously lost. I would have expected something like this to cost alot more.

*NOTE*: Yes, I know some people like the big hunky controllers. If you're one of them knock off $30. And I know some Thompson drive using Xbox's still function but not many, so my $100+ for the drive stands in most cases.
