First Look: PSP and Xbox 360 Interactivity

by Coola
8/5/2005
 Image
A source with an Xbox 360 developer kit has been so kind to post images of the Sony PSP and the Xbox 360 interacting with each other. This feature was one of the surprises Microsoft had touted at E3 2005 earlier this year, a feature that probably drew significant attention from the Sony camp.

Below is the post created by the user posting under the name 'misterDNA'

Note: *We don't want to get the guy/girl/shim in trouble therefore we removed the source link to the original post.*

I finally got an xbox360 dev kit today, and was able to see how well it interacts with the PSP. It worked great - I was able to listen to mp3s right off the PSP through the Xbox360 Music Player, and view images from the PSP at full screen.

Anyway, here's what it looks like in the Xbox360 Dashboard - click one of the thumbnails below to see a larger image:

Would be a shame if the Xbox 360 actually connected smoother with the PSP than Sony's own Playstation 3. heh.. that rhymed

PSPs are for babies and retro game junkies that wouldn't care too much about connecting it up to their Xbox360s. I mean, who cares about connecting a PSP up... it's just gonna be like any other USB flash drive, digital camera, mp3 player anyway. whoooa... big deal! It took them relatively no extra time to implement anyway. Sorry, I seriously think portables are for babies. When I waste my time playing something, it's gonna be time well worth wasting on a real game machine (Xbox360 or PS3) not portable crap. That's coming from someone with a full time job.

I don't have a psp anyway, and I don't care for one cuz they are not that good. However, I think it's a really nice feature. I can hook up with other devices, it's going to be cool. I heard some comments from stupid people at g4 said...,what are they going to do with all these features. I think MS know what they are doing. Some of those people at G4 don't know what they were talking about, their maybe just there slaving away for Kenny K or sony. I think they were told what to say or do at e3. That's to Put down the 360 and claimed that their the best one. I think their the crazy ones, they have no proof, just empty promises and less action. They know that the 360 capable of doing many things like linking to a digi camera, etc. Sony probably not going to have that many features like the 360. Either they don't have them or don't know how, or they might think people don't care for. If the features there, people will care and use them. I know I will. I'm very interested to see that you can link the psp to the 360. Does sony know about this? They are probably getting pissoff right now.

I've got a PSP, don't use it much though so I doubt I'll ever connect it with the 360. The only use I could see is maybe the photo viewing, but as far as music....no. The PSP is terrible at dealing with music files.

Now if I had an iPod, I'd definitely be connecting that up. hell the stereo in my car can connect up to an iPod, so as soon as I get one I'll want to connect it up to both and avoid those annoying disks.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony put out a PSP patch to disable the X-Box360 from interacting with its PSP. Does Microsoft have to get authorization from Sony to develop something like this? I would think that Sony could sue Microsoft over this.

umm, you must not have a PSP because if you have firmware version 1.51 or above you can't download most of the homebrew stuff. In fact, you can't really do anything with firmware 1.51 or above, which is why I f*cking hate Sony and won't be buying their PS3.

I've heard of some games already requiring the updated firmware too, so even if you are lucky to get a PSP of the 1.00 or 1.50 firmware, you'll be out when you get a new game. I'm sure when GTA comes out it'll require the latest firmware update too.

problamer12, try www.psp411.com. Anyway, this is just a simple little feature. I have no idea why you feel the need to bash the PSP. Ok, you don't like it. Why bother slamming it? It's not like it's competing with the 360 anyway. Man, some people just love to whine about stuff.

You know, I wouldnt doubt that the Xbox360 will interact with the PSP better than the PS3. However, I heard that the PS3 will be able to do a number of things:

1.) Toss my salad
2.) Empty my wallet
3.) Blend a smoothie
4.) And oh yeah, Play some games and DVDs

No, really I dont have a PSP, but it's VERY interesting that the Xbox360 can interface with it..considering that its technically from a rival corporation. I wonder if the Revolution will be able to play both Xbox games and PS2 games as well as the other stuff that's planned for it as well...LOL !!!

what is all the fuss about the psp being able to read the psp?
i thought the psp's usb made it act just like any other card reader when connected to the pc? why would the 360 have any other trouble accessing it?
shouldn't a modded xbox and hacked cable be able to interface just as well?

You can download the update from Sony of Japan's official website.

http://www.playstation.jp/psp/update/ud_03.html

They urge you that you not download this for a non-Japanese PSP, but this thread:

http://forums.gamespot.com/gamespot/show_messages.php?board=909101388&topic=22492555&page=0

clearly illustrates that the Japanese update does indeed work fine with US PSPs.

Well, given that the PSP acts as a standard USB Mass storage device (AKA USB flash drive/USB key), and the XBox360 can talk to a USB Mass storage device, it's not really surprising that the XBox360 sees it as a removable storage device is it?

That's about as much "news" as the fact you could connect any old USB Flash drive to the XBox360. I'm not sure that using the PSP's memory stick as a storage device really counts as "Interactivity".

$250 for a psp is highway robbery. Not only that, Sony keeps coming out with all those stupid accessories that you going to want to get them. Those stuffs are quite expensive. I don't mean to be too cheap or anything, but I'm not going to fall for their crappy psp. It's not that good, their games are really suck so far, I heard.

why is everyone picking on the psp? you cant compare to an xbox 360 or a ps3, its in a whole different class by itself and so far i think its the best portable gaming system out there in terms of how advanced it is, i was browsing pspworld.com with my psp and stumbled on this thread, by the way the japanese version 2.00 update works fine on my psp, i bought my psp in toronto so i guess its in the same US english category. The little web browser is pretty neat, and the psp is also now able to play atracs instead of mp3s, which take up much less space on your memory stick while the quality still remains good. For $250 i think its worth it, the screen is absolutely amazing, its a great multimedia device, its fun sharing photos with friends, watching movies while on a long trip, playing games, listening to music, or browsing the web at hotspots

heck..doesnt an ipod mini cost around the same?..and all it does is play music

Please people, the PSP in itself is the best portable gaming device there is. No Other portable gaming device can match up to it.

Why do people complain about its music handling?
It wasnt meant to handle music it was designed solely for gaming. They stated year ago they designed the PSp from the ground up for gaming and then they started adding features to it like music, movies, photos, internet.

The PSP is the best portable gaming solution there is hands down. nothing even comes close.
As a gaming device is it very good. graphics are very good and some games are highly detailed.

As far as its connectivity to the XBOX 360 its nothing more then its connectivity to the PC. You still have to buy a special USB to USB Mini cable since i doubt the xbox will have USB mini cables as a standard. You cant do anything more then browse and transfer which a PC is still much better at. As far as connectivity to the XBOX 360 is concerned your still better off using your computer since the XBOX 360 probably wont be able to convert videos into PSP compatable formats.

If you dont have a PSP then STFU about it. You never had a chance to integrate a PSP into your lifestyle like PSP owners have. Yeah you can listen to music on an Ipod but can you watch movies on your ipod. I dont think so. And the next gen ipod has such a small screen watching movies on it would be crap. The PSP is a good all around portable entertainment device. the Ipod is" only" good as a portable music player.

Most of you people are so un-informed when it comes to the gaming industry that you make a big deal about the xbox connecting to the psp. When a PSP is in USB mode it turns into a Memory Stick Duo reader and nothing more. It would be the exact same if you went to the store bought a USb to Memory Stick Duo reader and attached it to the xbox and placed your PSP memory card in it. You would see the exact same thing and be able to do the same functions.

Sony has the rights for PSP connectivity beyond turning the PSP into a 250 dollar memory stick reader. Its funny to see all the 360 fanboys complain about microsofts move to have PSP compatability but in reality the xbox 360 has no more compatability to the PSP then a PC, in fact it has less.

no this wud be a cool feature if it works in the same way u can hook up a psp to the ps2, that allows you to play your game at home then transfer the data onto the psp (and if u have the same game on umd) and continue playing. If u could do this with the 360 itd be pretty cool

Ok heres the low down I have the Sony PSP Entertainment System ... From what I can see the Xbox 360 will be no diffrent to that of the Xbox. With GAMING, and INTERNET LINKUP WHICH YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR MONTHLY TO GAME. so now the psp ...

THE SONY PSP SYSTEM ON Firmwire Version 2.5 (UK) Includes:

- Free Internet Access through modem/router.
- Portable TV through LocationFREE Player
- Gaming
- Watch Films/DVDs
- Play Videos
- Store up to 1273 hours of music playback with a 2MB Memory Duo Stick.

RUMORS

- PSP is going to be turned into a remote control for IR (Infra-red) consoles i.e. PC, CD PLayer, TV etc ...
- PSP Will support Macromedia Flash

In my Opinion, The PSP WILL EXCELL ALL GAMING AND PORTABLE MEDIA CONSOLES THAT ARE GOING TO SPRING UP IN THE FUTURE INCLUDING THE XBOX360.

Because of the statement Above.

For God's sake, will you kids just grow up and stop with the 'my console is better than yours' argument, it was tired when the C64 and Spectrum were around and never improved with all the other consoles in history!

Who gives a damn if one console is better than another?! I have played pretty much every console there is and they all have their own merits. For every Halo there is aMetroid and for every Tekken there is a DOA and for every Medal of Honour there is, well.....Medal of Honour. Seriously, most software houses produce games across all three formats and will continue to do so. There are very few 'Killer Apps' these days that are console specific and those that were (Resident Evil, GTA to name but two) have since been ported and 'improved'.

As for portable gaming, both the DS and PSP are excellent machines with huge future propects that go beyond simple gaming. So stop throwing your toys out the pram declaring each console to be 'kiddie' and realise that 'Shitendo' have probably been in the market far long than you realise and have an excellent grasp of what makes a good game and great gaming experience, Microsoft have the expertise and finance to create an excellent console with superb home media capabilities and that Sony have the technological history and produce incredibly revolutionary hardware.

I am not against a little healthy competition, in fact if it encourages companies to produce better and better games then great (although to think a lot of companies are in it to produce great games is a joke, if they were then why produce mass market trash that we have all at some point bought and played), but lets just not forget that gaming is not just about graphics prowess alone but innovative and engrossing gameplay. The 360 will be huge, as will the PS3 and the Revolution, none of the companies involved will be losing out on any sleep i am sure by the time they are all in the market place.

But that's just my opinion.
