Xbox 360 Launch Lineup Announced
Developers commit to the success of the next-generation console.

Today at X05, the Xbox brand experience for the games and entertainment industry, Microsoft Corp. unveiled an incredible lineup of games for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system as it gears up for launch Nov. 22 in North America, Dec. 2 in Europe and Dec. 10 in Japan. A series of special guests, including Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer for Epic Games Inc., Todd Hollenshead, co-owner and CEO of id Software Inc., and Gerhard Florin, executive vice president and general manager of International Publishing for Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), joined Xbox executives Robbie Bach, J Allard, Peter Moore and Chris Lewis on stage to talk about their new titles for Xbox 360.

Titles that will form part of the impressive Christmas holiday portfolio include these:

Kameo™ (MGS-Rare Ltd.). Renowned game developer Rare introduces Kameo: Elements of Power™, a mystical action-adventure game available exclusively on Xbox 360, in which the ability to morph into unique and incredible warriors allows Kameo to search out and battle ever-present evil. Boasting impeccable next-generation graphics and innovative gameplay, “Kameo” shines as a giant leap in game development. Continuing its legacy of creating dynamic puzzles, immersive combat and enormous environments, Rare fuses multiple genres to create a strikingly fun gaming experience destined for widespread appeal.

Perfect Dark Zero™ (MGS-Rare). Joanna Dark returns in the Xbox 360-exclusive Perfect Dark Zero, the prequel to the international award-winning and multimillion-selling first-person shooter Perfect Dark® from famed game developer Rare. A secret war has begun between shadowy corporations bent on world domination. Joanna Dark and her father, Jack, are caught up in the fight for the planet’s future. A routine bounty-hunting mission rips open a global conspiracy that will change Joanna’s destiny — forever.

Project Gotham Racing® 3 (MGS-Bizarre Creations Ltd.). The popular PGR® franchise zooms onto the Xbox 360, expanding many of the Project Gotham Racing features that gamers have grown to love. PGR 3 creates the ultimate roster of the hottest supercars in existence, introduces them to the high-definition era, and drops them into a completely new gaming world, where style rules the road. Racers define and create individually customized gameplay, and can race each other — online or offline. The Project Gotham Racing franchise is designed by Bizarre Creations, a long-established independent games developer, based in Liverpool, England. Bizarre is focused on producing high-quality, playable games that make the most of the advanced technology for which they are designed. Bizarre Creations can be found on the Web at http://www.bizarreonline.net or http://www.bizarrecreations.com.

Other great games announced or shown at X05 included these:

Crackdown pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the introduction of the first truly 3-D persistent playground, highly innovative cooperative gameplay, and an extensive prop interaction system all while taking place in a massive and highly stylized urban center. All strategies and tactics are acceptable provided players clean up the streets. Players roam a virtual city built to encourage and allow the full width, depth and height of the space to be explored and exploited. “Crackdown” will offer free-form gameplay, over-the-top action, and, for the first time in this genre, online cooperative play.

Halo 3 Release "When It's Ready"
Earlier Gates PS3-related comments were "philosophical", not literal.
by Wade Steel

October 4, 2005 - Robbie Bach, President of Microsoft's Xbox entertainment and devices division, indicated that earlier comments made by Bill Gates that Halo 3 would be available to counter the release of Sony's PlayStation 3 next-generation gaming console were "philosophical" and not to be taken as a literal pledge, according to an interview at InfoWorld.com.

In response to a question regarding comments made in Time Magazine by Bill Gates earlier this year that Halo 3 would be released in time to blunt the launch of the PS3, Bach indicated that his boss was using the next Halo game as a metaphor for the upcoming Xbox 360 titles. According to Bach, "Philosophically, the point Bill was trying to make is that we're not just going to ship and not have great stuff coming up. We don't know when Sony will ship PS3. They've said spring ... What we do know is that the way our portfolio lines up we're going to have great exclusive content. Halo is something we'll ship when it's ready."

In the same interview, Bach revealed that the decision to make the Xbox 360's hard disk drive optional was due to concerns about price sensitivity in the European market. According to Bach, "It's particularly important in Europe where parts of Europe are very price sensitive and the channels where games consoles are sold are predominantly mass merchants which again are very price sensitive... One size doesn't fit all."

X05: Perfect Dark Zero: Hands-on
Hands-on the trim-figured Joanna Dark. New details on co-op, online, and more.
by Douglass C. Perry

October 4, 2005 - Perfect Dark Zero conjures up so many emotions. Tagged as the must-have game for Xbox 360 by many media publications, the amount of public scrutiny it's garnered places it in a spotlight and a category all its own. Is this the next Halo?

The impulse to compare them is difficult to deny. Both are @!*%-person shooters, both are published by Microsoft, and one represents the start of an old system, while the other represents the beginning of another. But the games are entirely different, other than the fact that they are both @!*%-person shooters. One originates from the grand-daddy of console shooters, GoldenEye 007, the other from a Macintosh shooter, Marathon, and previous PC-style shooters such as QUAKE and Unreal. Perfect Dark Zero should be compared to games such as GoldenEye, the original Perfect Dark, or TimeSplitters. Because that's the kind of game it is.

Another thing that Perfect Dark Zero is: The prequel to the original Nintendo 64 Perfect Dark. It takes place three years in advance, with a young Joanna Dark in bounty hunter training with her father, Jack, and not a member of the Carrington Institute as of yet. This doesn't mean Joanna is shy on weapons, gadgets or skill mind you, but it puts things in perspective story wise, and it explains what the Zero means as well. Speaking of artillery, Joanna will wield three kinds of gadgets, the Locktopus (a lock-pick), the Demo Kit (a package of various explosives), and a Data Thief (a special thieving tool). You'll have access to several vision modes, including the threat sensor, which picks out enemy threats in the landscape.

Prior to each mission, players have the choice of picking one of the three gadgets, plus weapons. This singular selection plays into the game's replay system. Missions are designed with multiple pathways, yet each one is only unlockable by one of the three gadgets, compelling you to explore the other missions afterward. After beating a level, you can check a score tally and decide if you want to replay right away for a higher score, or with different gadgets to explore the other paths. Perfect Dark Zero has that thing everyone so sorely missed on Halo 2, an online co-op mode. You can play through the game by yourself, or connect online and follow the complete story with a friend.

If it's weapons you're concerned about, Joanna will wield the Falcon, Laptop gun, Magsac, RCP 90, SuperDragon, and KSI 74 among others. If you like to move a little faster, via vehicles, she straps on a jetpack, armed with infinite heavy machine gun fire, and players can pilot a hovercraft for mass transportation (something useful in multiplayer online missions).

Rare's @!*%-person shooter is setup for a single-player story-based campaign, also playable in two-player SysLink or in full-screen Xbox Live. For multiplayer games, Rare has cut down the number of players from 50-plus, which it announced at E3, to 32 players online simultaneously. Perhaps that's a shame, but 32 is still quite a lot of people. Bots return in Perfect Dark Zero, though this time they're available for online usage. So if you have a game with 28 players, and want to bump up the number to 32, add four bots and you're golden. Or, if there are only five of you, you could add 27 bots to really bump things up! Rare's game will recognize logged-on players' bandwidth prior to a match and will recommend the best set-up for the group. Online co-op mode is set up differently in each level. Like its predecessor, four levels of difficulty are available: Agent, Secret Agent, Perfect Dark, and what Microsoft likes to call a Ninja Gaiden Level, "Dark," which is super brutal hard.

The level we played (Rooftop Escape in Hong Kong) featured Joanna flitting around the rooftops in the sprawling Asian city, while Jack Dark cleans the street of punks down below. I played as Joanna. Players are jacked into a headset, so information on your and your father's location is constantly transmitted. In other words, you'll hear info from the computer HQ telling you what's happening, but you'll also be able to talk with your friend via the Xbox communicator headset.

The mission is set up for cover-your-buddy and single-player sections. Jack will yell at you, "Hey, help me out down here," prompting you to unstrap that sniper rifle and pick off throngs of enemies attacking Jack down below. The action isn't that simple though. You'll face gangs of thugs on the rooftops too, forcing you to switch quickly between helping dad and defending yourself. Some enemies are close, and for them, the gunbutt attack dispatches them efficiently. Others are three blocks away, so the sniper rifle, with manually adjusting zoom lens, is the best call.

The mission I played involved constant motion, defensive situations, and cover shooting. The rooftops are filled with ladders, steps, and jump spots, indicated by small arcing arrows, so you always know where to go. You'll also jump on zip-lines, which carry you across the streets below. When on a zip-line you cannot shoot, and the camera pulls back into a third-person position. The view was pretty dang fabulous, too.

The game runs in 720p, so the imagery is sharp and clean, and the action ran at about 25 FPS. We were assured that the frame rate would settle into a smooth solid 30 FPS in the final build. Although the slower frame rate could have affected the turn radius speed, I couldn't tell. But circling around, either left or right, took a lot longer than I wanted it to. The controls also felt a little sluggish, neither as smooth nor as fast as I had hoped for. Again, I'm not sure if this was because I played a preview build, the frame rate was a little slow, or that's just the game plays. We'll have to wait and see how the final builds turns out.

Perfect Dark Zero looks good and is certainly much improved over the sporadic leaks we've seen and those early, rather bleak, screenshots. But even the build we played didn't convince us that Perfect Dark is entirely ready. It looks like Rare will work until the last possible day to put all the finishing touches on it, and in the meantime, we can say it was fun while it lasted. I'm not ready to say it's the killer-app we were hoping it would be. Hopefully, we'll be able to play a near-final or final build in the next month, at which time I hope to have better, cheerier news.

That list is not a confirmed list. I too get that mag, and it was a list of games coming out, pressumed launch titles. NOT CONFIRMED. There is still no list. Best thing to do is ask at your local game store on what the dates are, and piece a list together. But even then, those dates can change. FACT: PDZ and Madden will be out on day one. I'm hoping Ghost Recon is too. Only time will tell.

Madden looks as good as a xbox game. You can see screens at IGN.com. EA sucks. They cater to Siny and forget about everyone else. They dont push the limits of a system, they do it easy and fast. That why they got the NFL name. Now they dont have SEGA making them look bad. And they dont have to worry about making big changes each yr. A review from another site, said to wait for next yr, that this yrs wasnt that different from last yr.
EA SUCKS

There are a lot of games you can get on launch date. I know there is PGR3, DOA4, FIFA 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, Madden 06, Ghost Recon 3, Perfect Dark Zero (I preordered that), Kameo, Need for Speed Most Wanted, THUG American Wasteland, and Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I heard there were supposed to be atleast 15 games on launch date. The games in the gamestop ultimate bundle should all be out on launch date as far as I know.

Be careful, Ghost Recon may not be a luanch game. May come out in the first few weeks. Remember, MS stated that their plan is to have some games out from day 1, then add a few ever week after, in a wave, not all at once. Just b/c its in final, does not mean it availible from day 1.

Well so far that are not too sure what will be a launch title or not. Too many games that where supposed to be launch titles are still not ready. Elder Scrolls is looking to be a Xmas title, not a launch as it stands now along with Ghost Recon 3: AW. From the latest reports PDZ may also be pushed away from a launch. M$ is working around the clock to get PGR3 and EA is working hard with M$ help to get their games ready for launch. It will probably be a couple weeks before we know what is going to make the launch day time period. Some games however could be set to release before the system.

Either way M$ is going to miss their goal of 25 games ready for launch day. They may not even be able to get 25 by Xmas. But who knows that could surprise us all.

That news is still better than the news from Sony from the TGS, Sony, when asked for the PS3 launch date said, "We have no date set yet, and you know us, we will not say a date unless we know it will be ready by then". So all those PS3 people will have to wait till some unknown date for a new system, which will help M$ if they can get some killer games out and draw more and more people in.

The TGS show was good for M$ and the X05 was even better.

Lets just hope that M$ can do a better job getting games out from developers than Sony did with their PSP. That thing has been out for months and very few games (especially good ones).

Well lets look at it this way, we know what the upcoming games are right ? Then lets say that whatever doesnt come out around launch of this year, will most likely be out by or before next spring. And I hope you realize next spring isnt THAT far off.

I beleive this game will be out befor christmas, but they have not given an exact list of whats out on day one, and outs coming during their wave of games after. Thier plan is to release so many on day one, they come out with a wave of games.some many per week. All im saying is dont hold your breath, untill we see the offical word on it.

There is no way PDZ will be pushed back. I have already preordered it and three different gamestop people told me its coming out on launch date.
