Playstation 3 Losing Dev Support?

by Coola

Joystiq is reporting that game developers are finding it mighty expensive to develop for the Playstation 3 and as such are pulling their support and bringing their games over to the inexpensive Xbox 360 development environment. Though this is labeled as a rumor be on the look out for some PR damage control soon.

Source: Joystiq.com

“In the (Japanese) game industry, many people are losing trust in Kutaragi’s non-stop pursue of this evolution, people are leaving PS3 at a rate worse than Nintendo’s GameCube era” (source unknown).

Several developers, like John Carmack, have publicly announced a preference for the Xbox 360. But could that number be growing? The recent cancellation of Condemned for the PS3 seems to suggest as much.

  XBOX365 Says
I'm just curious as to who these developers are? Small fish or Big fish.

Big Fish or Little Fish!!?? I would like to think that when Team Ninja's leader and Tecmo's saving grace Itagaki stands up and says that he will ONLY PROGRAM FOR THE XBOX 360 BECAUSE PS3's systematics are not worth the effort to program for, I would like to call him a big fish. Or when the founder of the Final Fantacy Series leaves his own company to form anouther to make games only for the XBOX 360....I would think he would be a big fish (I was not even going to try to misspell his name). All in all, of the reading that I have done. The industry as a whole is not happy with the product that Sony in proposing to produce. I think that Sega, Atrari, and Nintendo alike can back me up on this when I say that is the developers that make a system, not nessisarily the system itself. Just my thoughts.

I have owned JUST about every video game system since the 2600 with the exception of the 3do and Neo Geo cause i wasnt old enough to work. I think that this is Sony's turn to step down. Personally I dont think xbox will be able to take japan away from sony, however will take the US , europe and most of the rest of the world, and thats all they need, they are increasing support in Japan tho. The PS3 reminds me of the neo geo. It is going to cost a ton of money to manufacture and manufacture games for. Programming for multiple cores is hard enough, but 7 spe's with a brand new optical drive, thats what doomed the saturn. dont get me wrong saturn was a great system and still is, but in the long wrong the two processors for the saturn werent ever fully used and games cost too much and took too long for games to come out. Screw ps3, developers want software to make their games easier and better, sony is not a software company, and nintendo and 360 will be my next systems, add the ps3 to the neo geo and 3D0.
EVERYONE BUY PDZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is great news for M$ either way. Sony will have to prove it wrong, if it is true, Sony will have to do more to get developers to stay.

From what I have seen in the past with Sony and their promises about their consoles, they only run at 1/3 to 1/2 of what they promise.

M$ and Nintendo could come out the top two in the next console versions.

I just read on another site, that Sony is worried that if they can not come down on price, many developers will not support it. They feel, if the PS3 cost too much, that there would not be alot of purchases, and then result in less sells, which results in a low market to make games for. Then they will not make games, b/c of low market. I predict, that Sony will lose the Blue-ray drive to lower cost. They have no choice.

Don't believe everything you read. However, I have noticed that there may be one major difference between the two consoles driving this possible situation. Microsoft has a very intelligent attitude towards development. Firstly, they set out, from scratch, to create a system both powerful, yet specifically constructed to allow for profitable hardware and software. This meant that they figured out how much "power" a next generation system would need to create the games that developers had been wanting to create. However, as anyone in technology will tell you, it's the software that drives progress. In regards to this, Microsoft (the world's largest software developer/distributor) immediately set out to developed XDK's that would speed up the development cycle (making it more profitable for all parties), and give the designers the ability to unlock all the power of the hardware they had spent so much effort in creating. It's the Dev Kits folks. It means better games, faster development, and running more efficiently.

In a genius move (I think) Microsoft retained enough PC architecture that new games for that venue will be easily portable to the 360. For the first time the best graphics and innovations in AI will be available for console play, at the same time as it's PC brother. I think that is the coolest.

I suspect that Sony has not gone to the lengths required to create malleable hardware, and software to allow developers to fully utilize it. They created this theoretical powerhouse, but then locked it all away and realized they never made an adequate key! Developers are now looking at extra months and larger costs just to bring their games to this console.

Don't get me wrong, once the brave few are able to get that beast (PS3) playing nice (extra months/extra costs), other companies will jump on board and learn the technique. But by then, the 360 could be speeding into the distance.

OK, call me an Xbox fanboy for criticizing this, but does anyone else think that list contains a LOT of filler. Do yoy guys remember all the garbage that came out for Xbox and PS2 near launch to flesh out the total number of titles claim?

Athena Pro Mahjong Final Four Player Mahjong? OOO that's a next gen must have.
Warabe Mahjong-Ou Mahjong? Man, is it getting hot in here?

Capom Action Action. Wow, that's like

Erm Fat Bunnies, Tecmo also suported PS2. It is Team Ninja's itagaki that is a raving xbox freak. Further more to the guy who compared it to the Saturn. GO WASH YOUR MOUTH! that devine thing cannot be compared to the devil. ITagaki compared the 360 to a super powered Saturn. ;).

I think small developers will faster go to Xbox 360 because of the lower cost. Big developers get the money returned anyhow since they are well known (SE for instance) and they will sell enough to get the money out of it anyhow. It is for the small developer that doesnt sell that much that development costs are more pressing.

I don't know, it sounds like an expensive marchine. They might have to strip down a lot of stuffs to lower the cost in order to compete. I could care less, I'm getting the 360.

I think Sony fans should bame IBM for selling Sony a bad product. The Cell archetecture bares a resemblance to the EPIC archetecture used in the Itanium line, and Intel can provide lots of info on the challenges of programming somthing with multiple execution paths. On top of all this, Sony's history in the industry for their big money makers has been consumer electronics, not software.
On the other hand, you have Microsoft. One piece of MS software is visual studio. Also consider the years of support for multiprocessor systems MS has. A multicore processor is very close to the same thing as a multiprocessor system. Ms also develops software for the Power PC platform.
Of course Microsoft is going to have better tools for development.
But it seems tat Sony hasn't learned its lession, developers complained about developing for the PS2, but it was the best name in the buseness at the time. Seems Sony has let status go to their head.

This news is from a Japanese tabloid paper.
In Japan, no one think it is true except anti-SONY people.

I hope you guys realize that Sony is not going anywhere. Yes microsoft has a good product in the XBOX 360, yet there is alot of information coming out that developers have already discovered some bottleneck issues with the XBOX 360!! The cost for developement is basically the same with MS and Sony! Also developers will not go anywhere, Sony's user base is waaaaay to large in the United States. I think you guys read way to much into crazy speculations, this is the same hoopla I read when Dreamcast came out, yet Sony still manage to topple the market. The Dreamcast sold over a million units and looked to become the new numero uno, and had a six month leap ahead of SONY. I know MS will not suffer the same faith, yet it will be the same. Sony dominates and MS is chasing it's vapors. Another important factor, Blue Ray will dominate the new DVD format, another studio just signed up!! Microsoft is pushing an inferior product with HD DVD.

Oh and I am not a fan boy, just a realist, and if I am wrong, lol, come back next year and rub it in.

XBOX 360 paid for..
Games I will get...
Madden
Need For Speed
Project Gotham
Saints Row
and just for laughs, GTA Trilogy!!!

Hey I'm not knocking anything here, but come on, some of those games should come bundled on a Pogo games disk. I'm sure there will be some nasty 360 titles too.
