Call of Duty 2 - Hands On
Article by: Andrew Carr

To start off, I just have to say that there is nothing in this article that can explain how great this game was to play. I won’t even try, not even a lame attempt at using well educated words in a rhythm of love to portray the brilliance that is Call of Duty 2. What I can say is a fair depiction, an entry way if you will to what you yourself can expect when you pick this game up come game time. And you will pick this up – oh yes you will.

Alright so they had us gather on the 21st floor of the Pan Pacific Hotel where the conference rooms are located and hauled us into a dark room with PC monitors and a few Xbox 360 debug kits that were hooked up to High-Def Televisions. Naturally I slowly hovered to one of the Xbox 360’s and claimed my seat while the rest of the press ventured into the room. The conference kicked off with an introduction of some of the big players of the games developer Infinity Ward that spent a lot of time and effort into the game. Amongst them was Jason West (Chief Technical Officer), Grant Collier (President), Vince Zampella (Chief Creative Officer) and Hank Keirsey (Military Advisor). I actually went with a jog with Hank earlier which lasted for a few blocks until I felt sick and had to turn back – but that’s a different story. After the introduction I brought out my handy dandy notebook and set it aside and then I had hand sex with the Xbox 360 controller while no one was looking for a good two minutes (as much as I could last).

Single Player:
Enter War World 2 – Again, but like you’ve never seen it. They had several campaigns to play from which include the Russian Campaign “Not One Step Backwards!”, the British Campaign “The Battle of El Alamein”, “The End of the Beginning” (El Daba), “Rommel’s Last Stand”, and last but not least the American Campaign “D-Day”. The very first thing I noticed when the game was loading (a very short load by the way) the Russian Campaign “Not One Step Backwards!”, was how they just plop you into the action. There is absolutely no waste of time, its war, you’re a soldier and you’re about to beat the crap out of the invading army. Just as in previous Call of Duty games, you don’t feel alone. There is always someone with you or very near you and if your fellow men die well then there is surely more on the way.

Screenshot

I don’t *really* want to go through the mission in detail because that would spoil a bit of the fun. What I will say is that the mission involved close quarter battle (CQB) and a lot of “shoot-n-duck” game play. You absolutely cannot run out ahead of your men like a super n00b and expect to Rambo the hell out of everyone. The sporadic resistance you meet will take patience and cunning. Slowly you’ll work your way through a network of buildings and streets going almost door to door to weed out the enemy. When you get shot (and yes… yes you will get shot) you don’t have a health meter. The interesting way this works is by your natural senses. You’re screen flashes red and your breathing and heart rate will go up. At this point it’s recommended you take cover that is if you want to live. This style does away with having to scavenge for health packs like a hungry pigeon. I can see a lot of future First Person Shooters adopting the “no health pack” scheme, just as Halo 2 did.

Screenshot

To be honest, I had a bit of an issue with the controls, specifically the shooting but I solely blame that on my personal skill and the fact that I wasn’t use to the style of “slow down so you can aim at the guy you dumb sh**”. As far as what buttons do what just come to you naturally. You didn’t have to ask “what this does” or “how can I do this”. Just a few minutes of the controller in your hand and you can figure it out no problem. Yes I died more than I would have liked to from the many surprises I would encounter. But what helped me a lot was the grenade indicator. When a grenade lands near you, an icon of a grenade would pop up on your screen with an arror which… well indicates where the grenade is so you can get the hell out of there. This helps A LOT because when you’re in the heat of battle, a grenade being tossed isn’t the loudest thing in your immediately attracted to... what with the bullets wizzing past your head.

Multiplayer:
When I got back from my trip I read something interesting about Call of Duty 2 supporting 64 players through Xbox Live and I can tell you that when I asked they simply have not worked out a final number. I myself did not see 64 multiplayer, then again there weren’t even 64 people there at the conference, but I hope they can pull it off.

Screenshot

Screenshot Screenshot

The game supports four player split screen with five modes of play which include: Headquarters, Search and Destroy, Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch. The graphics take a small hit, which isn’t a surprise as this seems to be the norm for just about any split screen game.

Graphics:
Do I even have to tell you? At 60 fps, they’re great, fantastic, glorious, tear inspiring, pant wetting and orgasmic. I must have spent four minutes on the British Campaign “The Battle of El Alamein” just looking at one my guy’s helmet. No joke, I would just circle around and try to zoom in to see if I could find anything – anything at all that would convince me this wasn’t some CGI trick. It’s just insane. Oh the smoke. Best. Smoke. Ever.

Screenshot

Screenshot Screenshot

With normal mapping in place and many events going on in any particular event, to environmental effects or lots of people on one screen, there wasn’t any slow downs. Everything was smooth as you would expect a next generation game to be. But I must emphasis this as best I can. The screenshots and the video’s you might have seen DO NOT; I will repeat this again… DO NOT do this game justice at all. When I looked at the released screenshots I simply shook my head. As great as the screenshots are, you must have this game in your hands playing it right in front of your face to realize the greatness… the power… and the intensity of Call of Duty 2.

Screenshot

Xbox365 says:
To put it simply, the game is a must-have if you’re a first person shooter fan and you’re getting an Xbox 360. That’s the conclusion – it’s a fantastic looking game, it plays well and has all the indications of a high-scoring review when it makes it’s final debut. It will be interesting to see how the other World War II shooters will pan out and I’m not sure if it’s even possible to some extent. Call of Duty 2 has set the mark for not just WWII shooters, but for all shooters to come at the dawn of the next generation of gaming.

Here’s the Call of Duty 2 Fact Sheet

Description:
The sequel to Infinity Ward’s 2003 Game of the Year, Call of Duty® 2 delivers an unparalleled portrayal of the cinematic intensity and chaos of battle as seen through the eyes of ordinary soldiers fighting together in epic WWII conflicts. I didn't want to mention the PC version, but the 360 version looked better graphically. Then again it might have been the fact I was playing on HDTV compared to the monitor screen of the computer. Of course theres that whole, keyboard/mouse thing but I'm a controller person so I would prefer the 360 version anytime.

this game sounds very promising, I can't wait to try it on a controller while kicking back on the couch(playing on a keyboard reminds me to much of my job). .... the controller is already getting top notch reviews!

Well factoring my personal adjustment to the 360 controller (i had been playing 3 hours straight with the controller S, so i had a bit of adjusting to do) I would say... 8 or 9. I'm not sure what difficulty they had me playing on but I was getting stomped lol. I doubt they had me on the hardest.. or else none of the editors could finish the darn thing. So yea.. 8.7ish on the difficulty for me.. which would probably be about a 10 for you.

The WWII games are okay IMO. The only trouble I have is remembering to reload after like 2 or so shots(unless I have something automatic), but other than that Medal Of Honor is a personl favorite of mine. I am very willing to try something different, and from the looks of Call of Duty 1, I am pretty sure thi sis just as good. And yes I LOVE HALO(like, duh!). Call of Duty on the other hand is also pretty good, but I have yet to play it on the Xbox360 demo disc.

I love first person shooter games, but especially war games. I don't know why people would be down on WWII games, if the games is good it really doesn't matter what period its in right?

one question I have, and maybe you don't know just yet. Are you forced to follow a certain path, or can you jump around with some free will. It sounds like you have to stay with all the other guys (bots) on your side, or you die. ie.... Battlefield 1942 you have free will to go and take out what you want.

This game will rock, but I hope I have a HDTV to play it on otherwise I would hafta get the VGA adapter ;[ . I truthfully have never played Call of Duty yet, but this is the game I intend to start playing this great franchise with. Anyway, not to take away from Call of Duty 2, but are you guys already shaking in your boots about how Halo 3 could quite possibly look like ? Give me a Wooot! Woooot!! And a H*ll Yeah !!

My god why doesn't anyone ask the most important question there is - Is there keyboard and mouse support !!!@?

Playing an fps with a controller is like putting a geo metro engine in a ferarri - it just simply sucks.

The friggin x360 has usb ports, can they be used, if yes then hooray i don't have to tie my thumbs into knots playing an fps with a lame controller....

and if not what lame excuse did the developers come up with as to why not.

Deal breaker for me for this game - please ask the devs this in the dev chat thats coming up.

Bringing a Keyboard and Mouse to the table wouldn't be fair to the gamers when playing online when most will be using a controller. If you want to play PC - go to the PC.

Seems like I am not the only one!! Waiting for PS3!! MS is insane!! The gameing industry experts are right, it's still too early for NEXT GEN. I smell a Dreamcast, they did manage a million sales before the PS2, and look where it got em!!

Give the developers time to really get into the system. The launch titles and the titles you will see later next year aroun Q3 will be a quantum leap in beauty.

Wal Mart is using a Samsung HDTV for the XBOX 1.5, and the hooked it up using composite cables, the thing looks like crap. They had nothing to o with installing the system, an XBOX rep did the work.

I played the demo at wally-world and I was extremely pleased. The actual textures of the people and the environment weren't that much improved over the current high-end graphics, but it's the crispness and lighting that are what drew me in. The controller, although tied down, is completely awesome! You guys have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for M$ to fix the problem of having the right thumbstick so far down the controller, that I had to use my middle finger for the trigger which was really uncomfortable and, at times, very painful during long gaming sessions. Now they have the design fixed so that it is comfortable to use your middle finger for the trigger. It definitely has all the right curves in all the right places. I just hope that the rechargeable battery for the wireless controller doesn't increase the weight too much.

Overall, the visuals of the game are absolutely stunning, not necessarily because of completely new high-end textures, but because of the HD crispness, frame rate, and the lighting. OMG, the lighting blows your mind. Coola was right, best smoke ever! Just toss a smoke grenade and see for yourself.

Oh, and to the guy that asked the question about the keyboard, M$ has already said a while back that keyboards (I assume they also included mice) can be used for text-entry, but the system will block their use from actual game play. Check out the 360 FAQ at teamxbox.com's website, it's listed under the xbox hardware section on the left of their page.

And to those who say this is the xbox 1.5, everyone said the same crap about the xbox 1 when it launched, that it didn't really push the bar all that far. Just look at halo 1 vs halo 2. It's the same hardware, but different software. It's true that the system is being rushed, but it's the game devlopers that decide how pretty the game is going to look, not M$. Although it is partially m$'s fault that the games don't look more stunning, but it's because they didn't get the final hardware out to developers soon enough and not that the hardware itself is crappy.

When it boils down to the basics, it is the software that controls the hardware. It's the developers who push the graphical limits. Blame the devs, blame M$ for being lazy and not getting the final dev kits out sooner, but don't blame the hardware! Three cores people! The games out now on the pc don't even take advantage of dual-core desktop pc's!

I'm anxious about the PS3 too, but I'm not gonna wait until xmas '06/spring '07 to get my HD gaming on! Remember how long it took the PS2 and the PSP to reach American shores! Even if it launches in Japan this spring, it will be at least holiday '06 by the time we get it!

"Bringing a Keyboard and Mouse to the table wouldn't be fair to the gamers when playing online when most will be using a controller. If you want to play PC - go to the PC."

Is this Microsoft offiicial position on this?

I have played PC fps for years, but would like to play the xbox 360, etc... but you are saying I will not be able to use a keyboard and mouse for my fps games?

You have to keep in mind, that although in your small world of thinking, this has nothing to do with what 'gamers online' will be doing. I personally like keyboard and mouse as a PREFERENCE. But you are sure, 100% that Cod2 will not be supporting a KB and mouse?

I played this JAGGY-INFESTED game and thought it was the worst. it was not the TV or the settings, I know. I set it up.

It sucks major donkey balls. I wanted it to be the smoothest game ever, but they arent using anti-aliasing so the jaggies are here to stay.

Sucks really, the PS2 has been out for how long? JAGGIES ARE SOOOO LAST GEN!

I cannot wait to play Call Of Duty 2. I played the demo on my PC, it is sooo cool. I have the first 1 too, i thought that was the bomb. But I am sure that this one will be a hell of a lot better. The graphics, the gameplay, the sound, everything.

To re-empahsise Coola's point about the graphics and that the 360 is not xbox 1.5 i would strongly recommend looking at a little title called gears of war....
