Xbox Live Online Gaming Community Doubles In Just One Year, New Member Added Every 30 Seconds

Unrivalled Content and Player Experiences Continue to Fuel Exponential Growth of Worldwide Online Community

Once again breaking new ground and proving that gamers around the world crave personalised and social online experiences, Xbox Live, the premier global online console games and entertainment service from Microsoft, now unites two million gamers from around the world. Xbox Live continues to grow exponentially having doubled its online, dynamic community in just one year – the equivalent to adding one Xbox Live member every 30 seconds.

"Reaching the two million member milestone in such a short time speaks volumes about the depth and vibrancy of the Xbox Live community," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Home and Entertainment Division and chief Xbox officer at Microsoft. "This enormous growth is a true testament to the compelling content and engaging experiences enabled through Xbox Live today. The service is inspired by the creative power of the individual and fuelled by the passion of a worldwide community."

The two million Xbox Live member milestone is due largely to a growing library of videogame titles that deliver incredible online experiences, the availability of exciting downloadable content to extend gaming experiences, and a vibrant and active online community. More than 20 million pieces of content have been downloaded to date, proving that gamers today have access to and are experiencing more exciting downloadable content to enhance their gaming experience such as extra levels, maps and weapons than ever to enhance their gaming experience.

Additionally, there is plenty more for Xbox Live gamers to look forward to in the coming months through both current-generation titles and the launch of Microsoft's eagerly anticipated next-generation Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. With the launch of the console this Christmas, the Xbox Live portfolio is planning for more then 300 multiplayer Xbox and Xbox 360 games available worldwide for gamers to enjoy. New Xbox 360 titles will include "Perfect Dark Zero (Microsoft Game Studios), "Project Gotham Racing 3" (Microsoft Game Studios), "Madden NFL 06" (Electronic Arts), "Dead or Alive 4" (Tecmo), and "Call of Duty 2" (Activision). In the current generation, third party publishers continue to show strong support for Xbox Live with games such as "Tony Hawk's American Wasteland" (Activision), "Star Wars Battlefront II" (LucasArts) and "Battlefield 2: Modern Combat" (Electronic Arts).

Transferring user accounts to the next-generation console will be easy. As Xbox Live is a universal service between both platforms, gamers can move their Xbox Live memberships seamlessly from Xbox to Xbox 360, while still enjoying online games and entertainment on the current generation system.

With the launch of the Xbox 360, Xbox Live gamers can expect incredible new experiences in the next generation of the online games service, including:

Multiple levels of service To fit the unique needs and interests of each Xbox Live gamer, the Xbox Live Gold membership offers all of the Xbox Live Silver features as well as multiplayer online gaming, tournaments and participation in original programs such as "Game with Fame" and other Prime Time activities. The Xbox Live Silver membership includes free basic features such as Gamer Profile, access to the Xbox Live Marketplace and voice chat and messaging.

Gamercards. A quick summary of a player's Gamer Profile, this contains a player's Gamertag, Gamer Picture, Reputation, Gamerzone and personal motto.

Gamerzone. Players can choose their style of social gaming and be seamlessly paired with others based on their preferences.

An integrated message centre. Members can keep connected even when they're not online playing.

Xbox Live Marketplace. This one-stop shop for all downloadable content include free content such as trailers and themes as well as full-featured premium content, such as racing cars and maps.

I just want to know one question: how does Sony make the claim to having more people online than Xbox Live?

Funny thing really...

90+ Million PS2's - Online Is Free Right - 2.4 Million Users?

I wonder why.. if PS2 Online is free.. then how come their online installed base isn't larger.

HMMM...

I don't think that a comparsion by ratio is fair in this case. I think that even if the xbox had the same user base as the ps2 the number of people playing online would still be the same. Online gaming is still a pretty niche market on the consoles. This is in large part due to the fact that many console owners still don't have broadband, and the casual gamer which makes up most of any console fanbase probaly wouldn't even bother to play online even if they did have broadband.

My point was that a lot of people claim Sony Online is Free. If it's free then those numbers should be respective of it's user base. I would have to disagree with you that Xbox Live's numbers would remain at 2 Million if they had 90 million units sold world wide.

Broadband has grown significantly in several markets and that's becoming less and less of a debate factor.

Infact isn't Sony Online also available to narrowband? So that *should* have increased their numbers even more. Wouldn't it?

that's a crock fat bunnies and you know it. if ms had 90 units then the number of xbl gamers would increase exponentially.

they don't call socom "slocom" for nothing, .. its the unified infrastructure and easy to use interface that makes xbl so popular, expect it grow very fast when the x360 is released.

the reason why sony doesn't have more people onlline is because the service is weak, thats a bonafide fact.

sony could improve in the next generation but it will be an uphill battle.

between the structuring of xbox live and the higher rate of hardcore gamers.. this is how xbox has the higher ratio of owner of console to online game with said console..

Coola you meant 2.7mill and that was from almost a year ago, by now they prolly have more than 3mil+(sony im talking about)... Just wait till Socom3 comes out sony wont only be ahead by 1mil+ you can write that down.
Oh on more thing, Imagine if sony had like a server that ppl log on to to play online there would at least 2.7mil (from a year ago) Ps2online users right?... MS just makes it look like WOW when all they really have is 2mil user NAMEs or w/e they call it.

Those 2 million user "NAMEs" are called Gamertags, which are backed up by PAID Xbox Live subscribers. Sony could only begin to hope to provide 1/4 of what Xbox Live has to offer.

I was proud to be part of the Xbox Live beta testing, and back then I knew Xbox Live was going to kick Sony's arse. Nothing, I mean nothing, can even come close to the rich gaming online environment XBL has to offer. Unique, persistent gamertags, broadband-ONLY connections (which is definitely a GOOD thing), friends list, hundreds of XBL-enabled games, voice chat (in-game and in-lobby), OptiMatch, etc.

ber, please do not stick your nose in something you do not know. It makes Sony fanboys like yourself look bad.
