Oblivion on Tour: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hands-On Bethesda’s massive RPG for the Xbox 360 is nearly here. By Cameron “Urizin” Woolsey
February 23rd 2006 - San Francisco
Role playing games were few and far between on the original Xbox. While we did have several great titles like KOTOR and Morrowind, RPG enthusiasts felt a little neglected by the lack of role-playing games on the Xbox.
But Microsoft is hoping to change all that with their latest console; and it all starts with Bethesda’s latest title in the nearly 20-year-old Elder Scrolls series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The previous title, Morrowind, was silently one of the most popular games on the Xbox, and became the most popular title in The Elder Scrolls series. Bethesda is hoping to copy their past success with Oblivion. My recent time with their week-old build showed me that they might do just that and then some.
The game starts up with a video showing off scenic locals in Cyrodiil, the land Oblivion takes place in. Cyrodill is the home of the Imperials, which means that you’ll see much more of them than any other race in the game. Once the video is finished the game begins with the character customization screen. You’ll be able to choose in-between seven races: Imperial, Nord, Orc, High Elf, Dark Elf, Wood Elf, Khajiit, Redguard, Bretons, and Argonian. Each race will have nearly unlimited customization including age, sex, facial features, hairstyle, and even hair color.

After finishing the looks of my character (I chose an Imperial) I became aware that I was in prison! Not always the best mood booster. But while I was there I decided to take advantage of the Havok physics engine. There are bones and chains scattered around my cell all waiting to be played with. The chains moved very realistically. In fact the most amazing part of the way the chains reacted with the physics was how ordinary it seemed. Bones bounced and skidded along the floor and all the sound effects fit appropriately. Physics for the game will look, and feel, startlingly real.
Across the hall I heard several rather rude remarks coming from the cell across from my own. Apparently the prisoner doesn’t really like me. After a few more harsh words from my new friend, I began to hear footsteps coming from the staircase that is descending to the dungeon. Three armed men and an older, yet lavishly decorated, man step toward my cell door. After the men enter they ordered me to stay back. Since I had no weapons or armor available, I thought it would be wise to do as they say…for now.
As the older man enters he stops short and begins talking to me. After a short conversation I find out that he is none other than Emperor Uriel Septim VII. After our quick conversation one of the armed men pressed a stone on the wall. I found out that the reason why they come in here was that there was a secret passage out of the dungeon through my very own cell. I guess I should shelve my escape plans.
After the three men and the Emperor leave through the door I decided to follow. In the next room masked assassins suddenly attacked us. The Blades fought hard against the new threat but alas one was taken down. I didn’t hesitate to run on over and grab his belongings. Now armed with a sword and armor I move along with the rest of the group. After several more attacks by the assassins we made it to another door. This time they were not going to let me follow. After they shut and locked the door I was on my own.
Moving through a different part of the dungeon I stumble upon Giant Rats and Goblins. Of course they weren’t a match for my new toy and my fireball magic. I quickly moved through the dungeon hallways leaving only charred corpses behind me.
I finally reached my destination. Looking through a hole in the wall I see the Blades members and the Emperor being attacked by more assassins. I quickly rushed into the room and helped clear off one of the assassins.
After the Emperor told the Blades not to see me as a threat, we moved on once again. Nearing the end of the dungeon we find that we have stumbled into an ambush. Giving me the duty to protect their Emperor, the Blades moved to attack the foe head on. At this moment I was able to choose my birth sign.
After that the Emperor told me he was going to die so he begins telling me to find his missing heir he handed me the Amulet of Kings, the very symbol of Imperial power. I had to take the Amulet to a man named, Jauffre. Only he knew where Uriel’s heir was located.
A surprise attack from an assassin takes down the Emperor. After you dispose of the assassin, the final Blades member left alive comes to talk to you. At this moment I was able to choose my character class. You can choose anything from being a Bard, a Mage, a Warrior and more. And if you don’t like the list provided you can custom-create your own class and even name it.
Once that was over the Bladesman gave me a key to the Imperial sewers (adding Imperial doesn’t make it any more tempting). After finding the sewers, the only thing left in-between freedom and me were rats, goblins, and cave traps…and that wasn’t about to stop me.
At the end of the sewers was the gate to freedom. But before leaving I was given one more chance to revise my character. Definitely good for people with second thoughts about their characters based on what they just played through.
Stepping out onto land I breathe in the free air. I looked outward and saw a river and mountain ranges as far as the eye can see. As I turned around the Imperial City suddenly appeared before me. It was massive. For those who are familiar with Morrowind, imagine a city three times the size of Vivec with towers stretching toward the sky like medieval skyscrapers.

After visiting the majestic city I decided to venture southwest toward Skingrad. Making my way through the tall grass next to the trail the battle theme suddenly began playing. I was under attack by something! I looked around unable to find an attacker. Then I saw movement. Snaking through the grass a dark object jumped at me. Luckily I was quick enough to block the attacking beast with my shield. Moving toward the trail the attacker was made clear to me. A gray wolf jumped through the grass and poised itself for another attack. I sidestepped its next lunge. But alas, I did not turn quick enough and was repaid by a bite to the ass. Angry, I lunged forward by holding forward and pressing the right trigger at the same time. With a loud battle cry I killed the wolf, knocking its body back into the tall grass from whence it came. I limped back on to the trail, a swollen ass and a wolf pelt for my troubles.
Traveling in Oblivion is different than what it was in Morrowind. There are many hills and mountains all around. Forests are thick and often daunting. Imperial Soldiers roam the roads on horseback and will help you if you’re under attack. Something I gladly found out while being chased by a screaming Khajiit wielding an enormous battleaxe.

As I reached the top of a large hill I found an abandoned Imperial outpost. Worn and crumbling, the outpost looked like certain sanctuary from the dangers that surrounded me. Once again, I was wrong. Stepping out of the shadows a bandit approached asking for gold. Unwilling to give up my Septims I began to attack him. Here’s a helpful hint for new travelers in Cyrodiil: bandits are tough. Damn tough. I was still just a puny level one so I wasn’t able to put up much of a fight. I could go into details but let’s just say I ran like a sissy girl.
Escaping my attacker with the help of a wandering soldier (see above), I decided that walking was for chumps. Using what Bethesda calls “Fast Travel,” I teleported to the port town of Anvil on the southwest coast of the country. You can fast travel by looking at your map, highlight a city, and then press A. It’ll then ask you if you want to travel there or cancel. However doing this will definitely make the land feel much smaller than it really is. Seems easy right? But there is a catch. Using fast travel will cause time to go by. The amount of time spent will depend on how far you want to go. I plan on traveling everywhere on foot, horseback, or at least teleport through the Mages Guild. But that’s just me.
Walking through the town of Anvil I saw a man sitting on a chair next to a table on his porch. Curious I walked toward him. Positioning my curser over the chair on the other side of the table I pressed the A button. The game went into Third Person mode showing my character sitting in the chair. Once I sat down, it moved back into First Person view. I looked over to the man and began to talk to him. I asked about the town of Anvil and apparently it’s a very beautiful and relaxing town, that is, if you ignore the drunken sailors causing problems during the night.
I then proceeded to ask about current rumors. He then told me about a problem the town has been having. It seems that a band of all female thieves were coaxing half-drunk men away from the local pub, The Flowing Bowel, up to the woods where they rob them blind and leave them. By doing simple actions like this you can gain new side quests or objectives. You can also gain quests or topics from listening to local gossip.
I left the man to his thinking and moved toward the large wooden door that leads to the wharf part of the town. After the game loaded the small transaction the western ocean stretched out before me. The man was right; the town really was beautiful. Huge ships gathered along the dock. Out on a large rock to the right I saw a lighthouse keeping guard over the port. To the left was a large fort or castle.
As I walked down the dock I realized my time with the game was almost up. I felt a little disheartened since there was still so much more I wanted to do and experience before I was finished.
So I decided that my last act before leaving was to do something crazy. I quickly ran out of town and headed toward the stables. Then I ran through the gate, jumped on a horse, and galloped out of the area as fast as I could leaving a (very) angry stable keeper in my dust. Riding a horse is easy and it makes traveling across Cyrodill faster and fun. Unfortunately you cannot attack when mounted on a horse. After traveling up the hill some I decided to fast-travel back to the Imperial outpost near the Imperial City.
The enormous city lay before me. The sun was setting on the land of Cyrodiil and I watched as it slowly sank into the landscape. Another day has gone by in the world of Oblivion. The time I spent with it was great but not enough. Four hours isn’t enough time to enjoy a game consisting of over two hundred hours of gameplay. I walked away from the game only wanting more.

Features for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion:
NPC’s will disappear before walking through a door. You can have eight hotkey points on the D-pad. You can hotkey anything from magic to weapons or miscellaneous items. You can sit in chairs! The game tracks down everything you do from how many books you’ve read to how many jokes you’ve told. Horses can be injured if you fall off a ledge that is too high for them. They can also jump and swim. There are 50 achievements and 1,000 gamerscore to earn. You can unsheathe your weapon by pressing the right trigger. Certain areas or landmarks will be announced when discovered. Mastering abilities will open up new powers. Only seven major skills can be chosen when making your character. Your icon will change colors depending on whether a certain act (such as stealing) is legal or not. A red icon means it’s illegal. A green icon means it’s legal.

This sounds(and looks) like a keeper to me gentz. Even though I spent only a day or two with the original, I may end up spending a lot more time with this one.

It means they don't actually open the door when they go in a house, they dissapear in front of the door and reappear inside the house.

not really, cause if they did that, they would have to render all of the houses and all of the buildings and that would be pretty much impossible

Well actually it wouldnt be impossible to render the house and objects into the game.
Having a game where there is no loading or switching screens would be of a new era.
Just upgrade the engine and rendering, perferably on the pc, where you are able to make games of higher content and visual rendering.
put the extra effort into it >< its possible, make for the next elder scrolls, make it where we need like the 2 video card drivers to run a unbelievable game
make it run half rendering, and half graphics, make us spend 1000$ so we could have something like that.
Make it so the generation starts a new and games change

Well, saying its impossible to render all the houses makes sense in oblivion....since all the AI is unscripted, they wouldnt be able to tell when the characters were entering houses[or it would be very hard to]. In "Fable" they made it so the shop keepers would open doors, but it was at set times so it was always the same thing. With new AI it might be a little difficult to have rendering of all the houses in the area.... although having people disappear in front of a building does seem a little bit lame, im sure the rest of the game's awesome appearance and originality should make up for it and then some. No doubt this game will be a top seller long after it hits the shelves.

i hope the armor systems are the same as morrowind so that you can pic up almost any item from the bodys of dead npc's and not just what the game wants you to be able get like the blades at the first and the emperor so you can have some good armor at the first. oh yeah and 18 days from today

well from what we have seen and the recommended requirements, if you meet them, the frame rate should be top notch.

Frame rate may drop a little even if your computer is a top notch machine... but only when there is alot of character movement on screen. As for the 360, the frame rate is steady and rarely lags at all... If anyone remembers morrowind and its frame rate drops, im sure Oblivion will be a major step up in that aspect. Even so, a frame rate drop every now and then shouldnt be enough to stop you from playing such an awesome game.

well, hopefully. I have faith in Bethesda! I believe theyll be able to pull it off without any major problems... Even if there are some issues, its the first time someone has attempted a game on such a great scale. If this game is as awesome as I think it is, it will be a landmark in game history!!! :D

There will be invisible walls and mountains to bar you off from going further. Most likely the walls will be taken down by mods in the PC version.
The day to night cycle is 48 minutes. And please, if you don't want to be bothered by Fablewiz, just don't respond to him. You're doing exactly what he wants and that's to get angry and spout off.
