Xbox 360 Getting New CPU in 2007?

by UtahSaint

Microsoft will upgrade the CPU used in its Xbox 360 games console early next year, the CPU's manufacturer announced today. The new CPU will be built using technology that can reduce heat and power consumption, as well as potentially increasing speed. It will also help Microsoft cut the console's cost. The new 65nm technology is also capable of running software faster than that used in the existing Xbox 360 CPU, Chartered said. But the company did not state whether the CPU's performance when running software would be upgraded in any way to take advantage of this potential.

It is uncommon for manufacturers to increase the speed of chips in games consoles which are already on the market, because this can cause unexpected compatibility issues with games developed for the original hardware design, as well as bad feeling among existing owners.

Hmmm, so if 2 players are playing Halo 3, one on Xbox 360, one on Xbox 360 (a) - who gets the first kill in?

Not worth another $400 thats for sure. People should get smart and let the thing breathe instead of putting it in some cramped entertainment system.

Great, so I pay top whack for my 360 and pretty soon someone else can pick up one with a faster CPU for about $100 less! Great! I'm so pleased with my purchase!!

wtf happened to a games console having uniform specs during its life-cycle? Thats the whole reason people buy a console rather than a PC!! If a game is ever released that in any way takes advantage of this 'upgrade' I'll take my 360 over to the US and lob it through Billy's window.

Sorry for the rant but I'm rather annoyed about this.

All hardware shrinks in its life time just look at the ps2, They are shrinking the die of the cpu it will run cooler less lock up probs and heating issues, they won't increase the cpu, the clock speed will remain the same. They can quiet those loud fans.

relax before making silly posts. As mentioned in the post above, there is no reason why the new cpu will run any faster than the current one. Clock speed and the architecture of the CPU remain the same. It is simply smaller and should require less electricity to run and therefore produce less heat. The big bonus will be for Microsoft, since the CPUs are smaller, they can produce more with the same amount of silicon and save a little dough in the process.

Ok, so when i stomp my 360 and exchange it with my 1 year coverage i'll get a new one right? Just the thought of microsoft putting out a new product so soon and saying it's the "NEW AND IMPROVED" makes me sick I'm getting a PS3 and then we'll see who's the champ.

Did you read the whole article? Let me put it in a quote to save you the trouble:

Quote:

It does say that M$ didn't confirm if this would actually be taken advantage of but my guess it that it will.

idbirch2, yes I read the article. Of course the new chip is capable of running faster. The reason is capable is because the chip will run much cooler, and therefore Microsoft has the option to increase the clock frequency without overheating it. But in the console world, increasing the clock cycle in the same system is not the best way to go. I see no reason Microsoft would do that unless they were willing to replace all the current systems with th faster CPU.

I feel for all who ran out and bought a 360 at launch, for most they stood in line to come up empty handed!

MS still has not even filled all Pre-orders! Then they pull something like this! They should of kept this one on the down-low!

Alot of LOYAL 360 owners are going to feel SCREWED!

Anyone that was on the "fence" about buying a 360 or PS3, this might push them to the Sony side!

I for one passed on the launch hype, in my opinion the original Xbox just had to much life in the system to run out and get a 360.

My plan is to get the 60" Widescreen DLP TV f-i-r-s-t. To get the full effect of what the 360 offers.

Then when HALO 3 and a completely "DE-BUGED" 360 hit the market, then it's time to buy!

Gears of War could push me to an earlyer purchase, but I think I can wait! ;-)

LOL DAMN MS really love you guys... Most ppl who bought a x360 paid more than $600 to get one... Now a year later they're gonna have to spend at least $400 more to get the new one?... HAHAHAHAHA thats @!*%ed up. Oh wait, on top of all that get ready to pay an extra $50 for your xbox live renewal. /shakes head, poor fanboys.

Let me see you all fanboys defend MS on this move... Lets see how much of a fanboy are you.

FYI : From Gamepro.com....................

In early 2007, new CPUs will begin to appear in Xbox 360s. These redesigned processors should run cooler and be more energy efficient that the CPUs currently installed in Xbox 360s around the world.

To achieve this goal, Microsoft is pushing forward with its plan to shrink the die manufacturing process for the Xbox 360's CPU from 90 nanameters to 65 nanometers. A semiconductor foundry named Charted will handle the conversion to 65 nanometers, a size that is currently used by only a few of the most high-end, ultra-sophisticated desktop CPUs.

A key foundation of modern electronics is that the smaller a processor is, the faster, cooler, and more efficient it becomes. This is the principle that fuels the rush from PC CPU manufacturers like AMD and Intel to shrink their die sizes in order to improve speed and performance. Another advantage is cost: smaller CPUs use less silicon, which helps improve chipmaker profits.

It's unlikely that the new, smaller Xbox 360 CPUs will run any faster or boast any noticeable performance improvements over the current crop. It is, however, possible that this CPU will help pave the way for a smaller, sleeker Xbox 360 redesign. Not long ago, Sony used a similar strategy by waiting for improvements in chipmaking technology before redesigning its PS2.

I Still don't have one, and I'm starting to feel a little guilty going to a local dept store on my lunch break (on some lucky owners house) just so I can get me a little taste of the next gen gameplay.

(even buying used and marked down titles like Unreal 2 for $4 can't delay my next gen desires)

Initially I did want to wait( you know,.. get the very best version), but I'm just going to by one when they become widely available and get a warranty, by the time the new model comes out, I will have thoroughly worn out the old version and will be ready to switch out for the new.

I can't see missing out on games like Too HUman, Gears Of War, Fight Night, and XboxLive Arcade on a "technicality.

Must have Next Gen experience Now!

You're a bunch of cryng loosers!!!

Yeah, I bought a $7,000 SLi pc just 30days before the introduction of quad sli from alienware. So what? I pay for a system with certain specs and I'm getting it. My now "outdated" PC isn't any slower than when I bought it, still runs all the games as I wanted to in the very first place. The only differecne is that ii isn't the fastest anymore. But that's the way technology is. Imagine car makers not introducing safety belts or airbags just because the owners of past models would feel ripped... Rubbish!

But the worse thing is that MS just said that it's changing a manufacture process, then some stupid reporter asked Why? and they answered that with smaller technology they can not only cut costs by having more chips per waffer, but it also have benefits for the final user, cause the new chips will consume less power, ergo be cooler.

AND of course the cooler new chip CAN run faster. Notice "CAN", not WILL, and this is kinda obvious. But since heat and noise are bigger issues than performance in the 360, this is almoust surely the way to go.

Finally, they could very well not say anything, and then you just notice your little brother's 360 is quieter than yours, but noooo, because a very bad orchested or interpreted announce, a whole group of cheap people are speaking nonsense.

Truly and Utterly pathetic.

SHUTUP, listen to me..
The games will not run faster, although they might with the temperature lower... This is to help lockups and overheating.. not to make it faster. it will be a 3 core 3.2ghz processor with 1mb l2 cache same as before.. but smaller to help it cool down.

BUT if you have a 360 and keep it in a ventilated area not in a damn entertainment box ( if u do at lest meke sure theres no back otherwise the air behind heats up to60, and its blowing hot air on processor meaning at best its 80c which is BAD let the air move around and you wont notice the difference....

Oh and for all of you who feel " betrayed by microsoft..."

almost all first gen consoles have updates...
Ps2 was updated.. smaller die... new case...dvd issues resolved... but the old onesworked so why would they have to replace them?
hmmm

if you look at xbox 1.0-1.6 there are tons of differences, 1 includes 2 more gb of space :O but do you trade in your 1 for it? why jesus
and offered 3 types of dvds, thomson = crap others = good
but all worked, its updates to make itbetter

ifyour gonna whine about this, because every console will do it.. ps3 probably go to 45 if its 65 now...eventualy
what then? hmm this is no reason to boycott microsoft silly noobs
