Hands-on: Gears of War – Multiplayer
Article by: Cameron Woolsey

Gears of War was under some debate these past few months. Many claim that the game looks uninteresting and average compared to other top quality shooters. Well I was invited by Epic Games to play a 4 on 4 match during the show.

When I came in I was ushered into a chair and given a controller. After a quick rundown with the control scheme the game loaded up. My character was none other than Marcus Fenix the main character of the story. The match started in what looked like a small destroyed section of a city. There were overturned cars and archways set about the area for cover. You start out with three set weapons and a smoke grenade. You get an assault rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol in case the other two run out of ammo (good luck with that).

When the countdown ended my team and I ran out of our spawn point intent to win. I quickly took the right flank toward the large building. Running past the wreckage of cars and chunks of what used to be a building, I finally met my first target. A locust rifleman was hugging the wreckage of a car in front of me. I ran to cover and began my attack. Pressing the left thumbstick forward and holding the right trigger I sprayed some fire over my head. He quickly moved from cover to a large pillar like structure toward the right. I moved toward the right end of my car, and while I held the thumbstick to the right I pressed A. Marcus did a quick “swat turn” to another pillar directly to my right, and in front of the locust.

After some spray ‘n pray I decided to try a diversion tactic. I equipped a smoke grenade and threw it at the enemy. I leapt from cover and equipped my shotgun. Just as I had hoped he moved into the clearing that I had just entered. I took a few rounds from his assault rifle but my shotgun does a much faster job in close combat. As he fell to the ground clutching his stomach, an Epic employee yelled “ok he’s bleeding out, run over to him and press X quick!” Not wanting to let him down I ran over to my wounded foe and tapped X. And in a well-executed animation, Marcus lifted his leg above the locust and stomped the poor bastards head into the ground with a satisfying crunch.

Cool.

Apparently once the enemy has sustained enough damage, they enter a “bleed-out mode” where they drop to their knees and await the last deadly blow from their opponent. I’m not sure if you can bleed to death in this mode since no one lasted for 10 seconds after entering bleed-out mode without being finished off.

Now I’m sure you noticed how many times I used the A button while playing. The A button is what Epic calls their “all-move button.” And well it does exactly that. Holding down the A button you go into what they call the Roadie Run where your character crouches low to the ground as he runs forward and the camera goes into a realistic movie-style chasing mode. The Roadie Run gets you where you want to go quickly without making your head vulnerable to fire from the enemy. The A button does far more than that though. Pressing A next to a wall will make your character slam his back into the wall for cover and pressing A again will make him leave the object your using for cover. Pressing A and forward when using cover like a short wall or car will make your character leap over the object. The A button used with the left thumbstick will also make your character roll in the direction you’re aiming.

Overall the game is very impressive so far. The UE3 engine makes this game look great and the controls feel smooth. Gears of War feels like a winner so look for it later this year. And let’s not forget about that chainsaw.

My Take: My expectations have been blown away. Many of you guys know that I was one of GoW’s biggest criticizers and I never felt like this game was going to be that great. Well now I’m taking it back. The game is damn fun and if the single player is as good as the multiplayer, Microsoft has an easy system seller on their hands.

My E3 Rating: A

jo0j...you need to calm down...i think your taking him all wrong. he was prob just not holding his breath do to the fact: that us gamers who have been around a bit (not like the measly 2 years of gaming you got under your 10 year old ass), don't get super hyped for screen shots and movies of cinematics like all gears was before e3 and tend to stay on the negative till proven otherwise...it's the nature of the beast, been burned so many times...at least that's how i feel, and now that i've seen gameplay in action, it looks like something i would also be definately interested

I was already pumped about the single player. But from all the impressions I have read, the multiplayer is going to own. I am glad it is a little different than you average shooter.

Well I'm glad to see some people are throwing my intelligence into question over my reluctance to get overhyped by an unproven game. I've been overhyped by games based on what developers have said about it and screenshots showing off how "kickass" it looked only to end up be sorely dissapointed.

I've criticized the game because I never felt the need to praise it since in my eyes it looked no more impressive than some other Joe Shooter. Epic has since changed much about the game to my approval and removed my criticisms.

I wasn't being stupid or idiotic in my criticisms over the game. I've been playing games for a long time now and I have burned many times before. I'm glad to see that Epic has taken this game toward a direction that I wanted to see it go.

Really now, insulting is only another form of ignorance...

I really hope the "bleed-out" mode inspires more teamwork and co-op play on xbox live. Almost every shooter on the 360 boils down to the individuals skill against another team (COD2 PDZ etc) as everyone becomes there own rambo even when games are supposed to be tactical such as GRAW. I hope the multiplayer dynamics achieve what ARMY of TWO attempts to create, the sense of dependance and responsibility of each member of the team and maybe a bit of the 4 muskateer comaradery that team games should create.

I was in the same boat as Urizin there - the game didn't look all that appealing. When I looked at the game it just looked like your average 3rd Person Shooter. Take away the graphic sparkle and it seemed you were just left with run n' gun shooter. But also like Urizin, Epic has swayed my opinion as well and it looks like an interesting game.

You should also be a bit more respectful when posting comments, its almost as if you took this insightful criticism personally...

*sigh*
I criticized the game because their was no info showing that it was going to be any decent. Everyone was making a huge fuss over it and I never saw a reason why. The game looked average and I stated that clearly when I spoke of it. I wasn't the only one who thought this way. There were many people who, like myself, were simply trying to find any reason to even get excited over what we saw in trailers, previews and clips of the game. I've been burned by too many games in the past and a little bit of caution has never hurt me.

If I played it a year ago I guarantee that it wouldn't have been anything special. But now that Epic has made large enough changes to the game to actually justify it's hype, I'm glad to say that they are now taking it in a better direction.

Besides, we still have to wait until reviews start coming in to know the final verdict. I have a feeling the game will turn out to be good but we still have to wait and see.

Just chill out people. No need to get your panties in a wad.

Oddly enough, the 'all-move button' is just like the 'A' button function in Resident Evil 4(for NGC and PS2). But it actually worls like a charm in Re4, and it will in GoW.
