Cameron Talks With Pete Hines
Interview by: Cameron Woolsey, Editor

While in San Francisco I [Urizin] got the chance to have a “short” interview Pete Hines the VP of Public Relations & Marketing for Bethesda Softworks. Some of these questions may seem familiar to the members who participated in this thread.

Urizin: The question I have right here is for the detailed game statistics. Now I saw in the game you could pretty much have everything from how many jokes you’ve told to how many creatures you have killed. Which ones are your favorite?

Pete Hines: What are some of my favorite ones? I like the books one (laughs) just because I like the fact that so many people read books in the game. What else? “Horses stolen” is another favorite of mine. Also some of the Vampire stuff like days you have been one and how many necks you’ve bitten. I just like the diversity in all the different stuff that you can do that can be tracked.

Urizin: I’ve been talking with several people, friends and forum members, and they’re interested in one day seeing an MMORPG based Elder Scrolls game. Will it someday be possible to see such a game based in Tamriel?

Pete Hines: Yeah it’s something we get asked about a lot. It’s a different kind of game to take what it is we do from a single player standpoint and trying to apply that to a massively multiplayer world where there are hundreds of thousands of people playing in the game at the same time. It definitely changes the scale and scope of things. It’s not something we have immediate plans for. We’ve talked about and thought about it before but for us it’s a different kind of game with different technical demands, different design demands, and right now we still feel like we have a lot of things we can do from a single player standpoint. So we’re going to keep doing that and see what happens on the massively multiplayer side.

Urizin: I had someone saying that the storyline for Morrowind is really difficult to follow…

Pete Hines: Oh yeah, it definitely can be.

Urizin: …and he was really hoping that Oblivion would be easier to follow storyline-wise. Will it be easier to follow?

Pete Hines: What we do with the main quest for Oblivion is what we do for a lot of the quests which is that we track all the information from the active quest and give you a map marker with a specific target so that if you leave it (the quest) and do some other stuff then go back to it, you’ll always know exactly where to go and what to do.

Urizin: The recent PC Gamer talked about mounting a Unicorn at one point. Now will you be able to tame Unicorns like horses or will they run off when you dismount them?

Pete Hines: We’re going to leave that as an in-game thing you figure out. It’s one of our Easter Eggs that we let folks find in the game. We don’t want to spoil it all for you (smiles).

Urizin: Of course not. Will there be downloadable content on the game releases like gamerpics?

Pete Hines: That’s the plan. Whether or not it will be done, you know, we have to go through a QA process for all of our downloadable stuff just like we do for the game itself. So whether or not there will be downloadable stuff the day of release, I’m not sure. But that is our plan to have stuff like horse armor the day the game comes out then have new content released on regular basis.

Urizin: What other means of travel are there? Will there be something like Silt Striders or is it just going to be fast travel?

Pete Hines: No it’s mostly fast travel. There is a way to travel through the Mages Guild that is similar to what was available in Morrowind. But by and large the ability to fast travel wherever you want to eliminates the need for stuff like Silt Striders and boats that we had in Morrowind because you can jump to those locations yourself since you know where they are.

Urizin: Do you know how many enemies can be shown on-screen without a framerate drop?

Pete Hines: Generally speaking we put about five or six onscreen at any given time, which is pretty standard for most games. You look at Call of Duty, even when you have tons of stuff going on, you look at a frame at any given moment it’s usually somewhere around that area. You know we have smaller battles where you’ll have one on one or two or three guys fighting you and we have bigger battles you will have some guys on your side and some on the other side. But by and large we keep it around five or six characters on screen at any given point.

Urizin: There is a lot of talk about the new dungeon types. How different are they in comparison to the Morrowind dungeons where many looked the same?

Pete Hines: We definitely have a lot of different types in terms of ruins being different from caves and forts. But we added a lot in terms of design of those dungeons so you have a lot of things like traps, for example, or “bosses” at the bottom of different dungeons so that it feels like a different experience and you can’t just go waltzing in through any area without any fear about what’s going to happen. Because you never know when you’re going to trip a trip wire or press a pressure plate that’s going to set some trap off. It’s definitely more intense and a lot more minute-to-minute gameplay than Morrowind.

Urizin: Is the game playable without a hard drive? Can you play it if you have a Core system?

Pete Hines: Yes, absolutely. We had to. We knew that the hard drive was going to be an option and not a requirement. So from day one we always planned on being able to run the game without it.

Urizin: In your home will you be able to have pets like dogs or cats?

Pete Hines: You can’t get a pet per se but you may able to find an animal who will follow you around as if it’s a pet but we didn’t do pet ownership or anything like that.

Urizin: What types of housing are there for the homes you can buy? Can you buy mansions, castles, or just regular homes?

Pete Hines: The houses differ city by city. Some are on the smaller side some are on the larger side. At least one of them is haunted and you actually have to clear out the spirits with a related quest if you will. But we’re not actually doing castles or strongholds like we did in Morrowind for the Great Houses.

Urizin: Will there be fishing in the game?

Pete Hines: No. You can kill fish. You can get weapons and go fish but you can’t fish with a rod and reel (laughs).

Urizin: Will there be a bank system that will be able to hold your gold or items?

Pete Hines: No, in terms of items that is what houses are for; to give you a place to store your stuff. There really isn’t a need to store gold because it doesn’t have any weight in game. The one banking thing you can do is increase the amount of gold a merchant has available to buy stuff from you. So one of the things in Oblivion is that - as you get more powerful, the value of stuff you find starts to outstrip the gold that merchants have available to buy it. So what you can do is take some gold, say 200 gold, and you can invest it in a merchant. So whenever you go back to that merchant he’ll have an additional 200 gold so he has more money to spend buying your stuff back. So it’s like a one time investment to always have him have more gold when you go to sell stuff.

Urizin: This might be an Easter Egg but will there be a special merchants like the Mudcrab or the Scamp?

Pete Hines: Um, no, I don’t believe we did any Mudcrabs this time.

Urizin: Will you be able to trade items with other people over Xbox LIVE?

Pete Hines: No. It has the potential to unbalance the game terribly.

Urizin: By average, how many quests will each guild have?

Pete Hines: Um, I don’t even know. All of them are about the same in length in terms of being around 20 to 25. But quest numbers can be a bit misleading because a single quest can be “take this thing to this guy and your done,” or it can be something incredibly complicated that has multiple steps where you’ve got to do a lot of different things in multiple stages. So the number of quests varies because some Guilds use shorter quest structure and some have pretty long quests that have twists and turns along the way. They’re all long enough to be considered main quests unto themselves. If you just play one Guild like the Dark Brotherhood start to finish it’s about the length of a good main quest.

Urizin: With Master status in Guilds will we be able to give orders to lesser members or even recruit members?

Pete Hines: Sort of. We’re not going to give away too much info. But you will be able to do some things. You can pick up a companion of sorts. In the Dark Brotherhood you’ll be able to get contracts and send assassins out to kill people on behalf of the Dark Brotherhood. So there are some things like that in terms of recruiting members but it isn’t intended to be a focal point of the game it’s more to be some simple things that go along that have added benefits that are added to you to make it worthwhile.

Urizin: If there are noticeable bugs after the game is released, will there be patches or updates?

Pete Hines: Yeah if there is stuff that is found out after the game comes out that needs to be addressed we’ll certainly address it whether it’s a problem with a game or somebody says “gee it would be nice to have this feature,” or “I wish this would work this way” and it’s something that we can do simply then yeah we can easily do a game update to address those kind of things.

And what’s next the Bethesda team? According to Pete, once the game is shipped the team will be split into groups. One group will focus on support for Oblivion such as patches, updates, and expansions. Another group will focus on the next Elder Scrolls game. And finally one group will be working on Fallout 3.

  Urizin Says
I’d like to thank Mr. Hines, Erin Losi, and the rest of the Bethesda team for their generous hospitality and for this chance to get to know the game better.

Until next time!

Urizin out…

I do believe that this game is one of the best things to happen to microsoft's xbox. Oblivion is one of the best-looking, best story, and most creative games on a next-gen console. Morrowind was one of my favorite games as well. There were a lot of things i loved about the game and very few things that made me cringe (there were a few glitches and a few loop holes in the game that i sometimes needed to survive, but in the end made me feel like a cheater).
