“Wanted: Classic RPGs on Xbox 360” By Carlo Carrasco
The Xbox 360 has finally reached homes around the country. Let’s face it, Microsoft has done a great job marketing the new console, building up anticipation and launching it with an impressive launch lineup of games.
Of course there is no effective way of avoiding technical glitches that hound hardware launches. I believe that whatever caused these Xbox 360 defects was purely technical and mechanical in nature. But let’s put a few things straight…is the Xbox 360 the only console that launched with some defective units? Of course not! PlayStation 2 in Japan had flawed software (which early owners exploited to watch Region 1 DVDs) when it launched. The first batch of Nintendo DS units had “dead pixels” while the PlayStation Portable had button problem which Ken Kutaragi even defended!
Launch defects are only temporary and with the Xbox 360, they will be fixed soon enough. Give it time, it will happen.
Anyways the launch mania is over and the most important thing to focus now is on Xbox 360 gaming itself…and the future.
If there is any genre that Microsoft was not able to dominate, it’s definitely role playing games (RPG). Although RPG makers like Square-Enix, Konami, Game Arts, Capcom and many others snubbed the old Xbox, Microsoft was able to bounce back with genre defining titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Fable. As for Japanese-style RPGs, almost all of them went to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox fans missed out a lot!
With the Xbox 360, Microsoft is finally making progress to deliver more and better RPGs to it. Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are exclusives, Final Fantasy XI is confirmed and very recently, I’ve heard unconfirmed reports that in Japan, Game Arts is allegedly developing a re-release of Lunar RPGs for MS.
Of course, it would take Microsoft a lot of negotiating and deals to convince more Japanese game developers to bring their RPGs (and its many fans) to Xbox 360. Konami has Suikoden, Sega has Shining Force, Capcom has Breath of Fire, etc. Aside from that, it will take some time for new RPGs to come out.
While waiting for new RPG titles to arrive, it would be great in my view that Microsoft should accept re-releases (or remakes) of classic RPG titles from Japan to land on its new console. Re-releases and remakes will bring to Xbox fans not only nostalgia but also established stories, deep gameplay, unique characters and a lot of entertainment!
What classic RPGs should the Xbox 360 get in the future? In no particular order, my list includes:
Dragon Quest VII - This was the biggest selling title ever on the PlayStation1 in Japan with over 4 million copies sold. While the graphics look cutesy, small and dated, the DQVII’s game engine is very deep and its world is gigantic to explore with! This RPG is one of the most lively games of its kind and in my view, this will provide a lot of quality entertainment to any Xbox 360 owner!
Lunar 1 and 2 - While it remains to be seen if the above report mentioned is true or not, Lunar and Lunar 2 are RPG classics that today’s generation of gamers must experience! Once exclusive on Sega’s consoles, the Lunar universe has a very rich story, astonishing concepts and great anime scenes that will touch your hearts and shake your imagination. Not only that, it would be nice to see some 2D games running on the new console.
Final Fantasy IX - Among all the Final Fantasy games released on the PSOne, this was my favorite. The game was a tribute to the traditional fantasy of the genre (FFVII and FFVIII had 20th century and too many sci-fi concepts) where knights existed, kingdoms ruled and magic filled the air. Unlike FFVII and FFVIII, players control as many as 4 characters in a party. Not only that, the characters in this game was not designed by Tetsuya Nomura, which was a big relief because his character designs are too juvenile in style. Another thing, among all FF PSOne games, FFIX has the BEST ENDING!
Shining Force Trilogy - I must admit that I never played any of these RPGs all because I never owned any of Sega’s consoles. But I’ve read reviews, previews, fanfics and special features of this franchise and for the most part the feedback has been very positive (which easily justifies a remake/re-release). And for those who started RPGaming only in 1999, Shining Force III was released as a scenario trilogy (ala Lord of the Rings…one ultra long story) in Japan with each chapter released separately. It was easily one of the very best games of the Sega Saturn. Unfortunately for Saturn owners in America, Sega only released the first chapter of SFIII (some people blamed then Sega America leader Bernie Stolar for his anti-RPG stance). So how can gamers in America get the full story of this hit RPG? Microsoft should convince Sega to re-release SFIII in its entirety for Xbox 360.
Chrono Trigger - The defining time-traveling RPG of all! Chrono Trigger brings to life a role-playing adventure unlike any other and even until now its standards have not yet been matched, nor has there been another time-traveling RPG that delivered an unforgettable experience (not even Chrono Cross). With the talents of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest director Yuji Horii, Dragon Ball Z’s Akira Toriyama and Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy music), CT is a great marriage of incredible creativity, talents, deep storytelling and vibrant art (probably the best of 2D). Chrono Trigger was first released on the Super NES and years later on the PSOne. The Xbox 360 is a great destination for this one!
There are so many other RPGs that I just could not mention but my point here is that Microsoft should attract both modern and classic titles to their new console. Classic RPGs are numerous and are essentially rich in culture, story, gameplay and characterization. Considering its amazing design and power, Xbox 360 can be the best venue for all RPGs in the future…it can even push the PlayStation 3 and Revolution off the track. What has to be done to achieve that goal is for Microsoft to get into better terms with Japanese game developers and come out with a win-win situation…and Xbox 360 owners can be a big part of that! From a business point of view, these developers can test the new machine’s market starting with classic RPGs.

Carlo Carrasco Says
The Xbox 360 can be the ultimate console for RPG fans and it is all up to Microsoft to make its move. Of course, Xbox fans can speak out and motivate the concerned parties.

I would love Lunar but it is a rumour that just wont die. It was even rumoured for the original Xbox and it never came. Maybey MS should reinstate TFLO for the 360, that one had alot of fans waiting for it ;).
I loved Grandia too but Lunar was just better. (I actually own a SEGA CD and hehe its a great RPG ;) ). Take Grandia add a far better story and you have Lunar :P. And yes I know it is older hehe. I would love a new Lunar. It has been ages since.

Well my favorite one that's not on the list is Shenmue...I've got both 1 and 2 for Dreamcast and 2 for the Xbox. I simply can't wait for the third and final game! heard rumors of it coming onto one of the next gen consoles so hopefully it will be the Xbox 360 =) would love to play that in HD! MS you'd be slapping yourself not to get this one on the 360 because trust me this will probably be the best RPG to come out for the 360 and I know there will be people to disagree with me but if you've played both games and stuck with the story you'd agree.

Okay, I take that back....I would want to see pretty much every RPG isaacasda1 has posted with the exclusion of both the Lunar games, Kindom Hearts 2, and the original Grandia. And would like to include Super Mario RPG...oh wait..that one wasnt made by Square at all. However it was the first one that I've EVER played.

I'm sorry , but the Japanese seem to like the dumbest games i've ever seen!
The more Microsoft tries to woo Japanese gamers the more they will reject it. Just forget them and focus on the Parts of the world that don't have a problem with American goods! When they see what thier missing , they'll come around :)

Hmph ! All of u guys are damned amateurs, AMATEURS ! Are u guys serious, I've played all of these RPG'S and u guys havent even thought of mentioning some of the greatest and probably some of the first RPG'S of all time !! LEGEND OF LEGAIA and LEGEND OF DRAGOON are in serious need of a REAL sequel on the XBOX 360 and/or on the PS3.
P.S. - Among the videogame GREATS are SHENMUE I and II, and Final Fantasy VII. KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN UR MAKIN OR RE-MAKIN RPG'S.
