Two SKU PS3?

Ah yes... we haven't tasted a rumor of this calibur in quite some time have we? So the story goes, Sony may indeed be going with a two SKU model just like the Xbox 360. Not with a hard disk, but with blu-ray. As Gamerandy reports, an EBgames and GameStop employee has informed them that there will be two versions to preorder soon. A $399.99 version (no blu-ray movies, just games) and a $599.99 version for the full bang.

Source: Gamerandy.com

Further evidence of this is that GameStop has started listing PS3 games on their website.
hmmmm, the plot thickens.

The problem with the cheaper SKU is that it plays blu-ray games (as if there will be any) and not movies, so techinically it just would require a software update to unlock it. Hackerz would have a field day with this.
and 2 SKU's? I thought multible SKU's were bad? I guess not. I guess there good now since Sony has them.

$200 for the Codecs and such to run a blu Ray movie? I think not.

In other words... want a Blu Ray drive which works, you're going to have to shell out for the latter SKU, want a blu ray drive which doesnt actually read data, instead, simply spins and fires disks as projectiles, chose the prior.

Who cares if it plays on 2 HiDef TVs? $600 for a game counsel is a joke. I think the 360 is an overpriced marketing ploy with lots of bells and whistles to separate its consumers from their hard earned money - but at least it's a couple of hundred bucks cheaper.

All the talk about the console is a waste of time until we know concrete specifics. im more interested in the games, until decent realtime footage of actual games being played is released, its playstation who?

im confused then? ps3 games will be in either dvd or hd-dvd then but if you have the expensive version wouldnt that mean youve kinda wasted your money for something that plays dvds a little sharper than hd-dvd?

Right. You guys need to read that more closely...

1) It says the cheaper version would play Blu-Ray games, not movies. So that means that yes, BDs for PS3 games is still whats planned.

2) It makes absolutely no sense to disable movie playback functionality. Sony knows that the PS3 is what gives them the edge over HD-DVD in the format war, and they're not dumb enough to disable movie playback on more than half of all PS3s, it simply does not make sense for anyone to do this when they would make billions more if their format wins rather than save a few bucks on disabling it for the PS3.

Remember how the PS3 can't play used games? I consider this rumour to be just as ridiculous as that one.

That just doesn't make sense why would it cost almost 200 dollars more just to play blue ray movies?

Since this is totally illogical, let me explain this rumor's stupidity. It would force one system to use DVD's as a main format($399), while the other will have a feature that would make the other one totally useless, or it wouldnt be implemented at all. I hope this isnt right, because this would just suck for the prospective PS3 buyers/owners. Games will stay on DVD9 for now.

"So much for 50gb game disks, looks like they're using dvd as well."
"Games will stay on DVD9 for now."

Read the article or the comments: both versions would play games on Blu-Ray discs and take advantage of the extra storage capacity. The difference is the cheaper model wouldn't play Blu-Ray movies. That's if this is even true.

Actually this sounds like a reasonable move. I heard that the Blu-Ray camp was upset that Sony was intending to undercut everyone with $400 Blu-Ray movie-playing PS3's. If Sony did that, why would anyone buy a $500 standalone Blu-Ray movie player?

Considering EBGames, the $600 bundle is probably just that, a bundle. If you read the article, anything other than the two SKU bit is sheer hyperbole. He's simply theorizing. We have no clue what is going on exactly, and I'd rather have solid details before we say anything in response. Either that or Sony's simply floating out a trial balloon, sees the overwhelmingly negative response, and releases only one model, touting how nice they're being to everyone. After all, I doubt Sony would be doing something that would open themselves up to hackers (PSP, anyone?).

I want the version that's 1000 times more powerful than a pc and can be linked with other ps3's to form a nexus of computing power that would put the pentagons computers to shame.

also it would support an open source operating system that would enable the user to create their own movies like spiderman.

at least that's what the pre-hype said it could do.

Okay, okay, it seems that I have misread the article as far as game format. They both will use BLuRay for games. And needless to say development costs for those games will be expensive as h**l!! But, out of curiosity, how much are these BluRay games gonna cost anyway ? Will it be a similar situation with the PSP's expensive game set and cheaper movies ? If thats any indication of something thats imminent, then PS3 games should cost around $70 bucks a pop, with the movies retailing for $40 bucks. Because I know I am not paying over $20 for Alexander(which is already highway robbery for that lackluster title), not $40 bucks!! Highway robbery.

i remember sony fans critizing xbox for needing a seperate remote for dvds. that was 30$, not 200$. but hey, if people are willing to buy, i don't see why they shouldn't do it.
