Xbox 360 For Dummies

They have a Dummies book for anything of importance and now we can add Xbox 360 to that list. I sat down with the authors of Xbox 360 For Dummies, Brian Johnson and Duncan Mackenzie, then tried to unlock Xbox 360's hidden gems.

You have to love those lovely "Dummies" books, we sure do and that's why Duncan and Brian were nice enough to give us two signed Xbox 360 For Dummies books to give out to you guys. Read on to find out more.

Coola: Hey there Duncan and Brian, to kick things off could you tell our readers what exactly is your job title and what you do?

Duncan Mackenzie: Sure, I'll go first. I'm Duncan Mackenzie, and I'm a SDE or Software Development Engineer on the http://www.on10.net site... oh and a Xbox 360 fan on the side.

Brian Johnson: I'm a product manager for Microsoft Office for the Mac. I spend a lot of time working on Office and talking to customers about the product.

Coola: Background check - how did you guys get started working at Microsoft?

Duncan Mackenzie: I started in Microsoft Consulting up in Winnipeg (that's in Canada ), then moved down to work at MSDN (the developer resource site).

Brian Johnson: I was a freelance programmer/writer and I took a job as a technical editor back in 1999.

Coola: Pretty techy backgrounds. Mind telling us your ages as well?

Duncan Mackenzie: Oooh I'm 33, a spring chicken compared to Brian.

Brian Johnson: I'm 41.

Coola: Hah, 41 ain't that old…I'm 62 (nah not really).

Duncan Mackenzie: Hey, according to GeezerGamers.com, people in their 30's are 'geezers', so I guess it depends who you ask.

Coola: That depresses me.

Brian Johnson: My mom gave me my first console when I was about 12, so I guess it's all been around for a while.

Coola: Which system was that?

Brian Johnson: The Magnavox. There's one in the case on the wall in the Xbox building. I didn't know what it was when I opened it. My mom was really cutting edge.

Duncan Mackenzie: I started with some type of Pong thing, then Intellivision (which rocked!). My controllers are sticking, but otherwise I can still play AD&D on it.

Coola: I still have my Intellivision and it STILL rocks (if only I could get it to work). You sound like a bunch of big kids. You guys married or have children?

Duncan Mackenzie: Married with kids, both of us.

Brian Johnson: Yes, I've got a wife and three kids. My two boys have their own live accounts and regularly beat me in Halo 2.

Coola: Ain't nothin’ like spending family quality time blowing each other up with a rocket launcher. If you drive to work – what kind of cars do you drive?

Duncan Mackenzie: Nothing that would make it into Project Gotham Racing 3. A Pontiac grand am for me.

Brian Johnson: I drive a Focus. ZX5.

Coola: In addition to the previous question, I think most of our readers know that my dream car is the Bugatti Veyron and I won't shut up about it. You guys got a dream car?

Brian Johnson: Mazerati Quatroporte, Cause I can fit three kids in the back and drive them at 180 mph.

Duncan Mackenzie: I could probably afford my dream car, I dream about a Mazda RX-8.

Coola: Hah, such a good daddy. Alright so what’s a normal day for you guys – starting from the alarm clock by your bed.

Duncan Mackenzie: I try to make it to the gym around 7:00a.m. Head to work at 8:30a.m. or 9a.m. Then it is code code code (until it is time for coffee that is). Once the kids are in bed, that’s when I get to fire up the Xbox 360 and play... around 10p.m. each night.

Brian Johnson: Get up, drop the kids at school, go to Starbucks, work, eat, play games with the kids...

Coola: Oh I need to ask, so both of you have a Xbox 360? If so, when did you get it because I had to steal mine from an old guy.

Duncan Mackenzie: Heh. Yeah, we both have one...

Brian Johnson: I got mine in December. I had to borrow and beg before that.

Coola: What's your favorite games for it and what are the ones you're most looking forward to?

Duncan Mackenzie: I managed to pick one up in January, from someone who pre-ordered and also stood in line on launch day. Favorite Game right now has to be Oblivion, but I'm a big fan of Project Gotham Racing 3. Hexic is a common past time too.

Brian Johnson: My favorite game has probably been Project Gotham Racing 3. I also enjoyed Amped 3 quite a bit.

Coola: Yea Amped 3 was a big surprise for me. I think more people should give it a try because I had an awesome experience with it. Oblivion - Good god don't get me started. Game is m + azing

Brian Johnson: I have Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat on order right now and should get them this week.

Duncan Mackenzie: Most looking forward to playing Blazing Angels and then.... eventually... Mass Effect.

Coola: I’m a little competitive when it comes to my beast of a computer. What type of computers do you two own because I will bet anything mine is beyond what you have? (not to boast or anything)

Duncan Mackenzie: Crazy, I have a Dell 3.0 ghz machine, 2GB of RAM, running Media Center 2005, couple of capture cards.

Brian Johnson: I have an Intel iMac and a 12" in Powerbook. Does that count? I also have a pretty beefy Media Center PC. (Dual 3Ghz) and Nvidia 6600 video card

Coola: Of course it does. If you're curious, I have a 2.0 ghz Celeron... and yea… I'll leave it at that.

Duncan Mackenzie: Heh, can't skimp on the PCs, even if I do all my game playing on the Xbox 360 (except Age of Empires III). Nothing special for a video card on mine, I doubt I could even play Half-Life 2.

Brian Johnson: Yeah, I pretty much stick to consoles now for games.

Coola: Mine can barely run counter-strike... Ok I’ll stop with the personal intrusion because I’d like to hear more about the book you two co-wrote dubbed – Xbox 360 for Dummies. Could you tell us a bit about it?

Brian Johnson: Mmmmm counter-strike.

Duncan Mackenzie: Well, the Xbox 360 is much more than just a gaming console so we thought it needed some good detailed coverage.

Brian Johnson: We also thought that since parents don't tend to know a ton about gaming, that we could write a book that would help them to make good decisions about gaming and their kids.

Screenshot

Duncan Mackenzie: Brian actually came up with the idea to write the book, and brought me in. What a nice guy, eh?

Coola: Aww, that's cute of him. I’m curious as to the process of bringing such a book to life, with the Xbox 360 being such a complicated piece of hardware, how do you decide where to start?

Duncan Mackenzie: Well, the first thing to cover is getting it out of the box and setting it up

Coola: Which - might I add - was quite the challenge for me.

Brian Johnson: We had to dig up info where we could find it and we just thought about what people would want to know about it.

Duncan Mackenzie: Actually, considering how hard it was to get one... we might have been better off with starting with how to use eBay and Xbox tracking sites to find one.

Brian Johnson: Ha

Coola: Yea I can totally see it now, Chapter 1: How to use a baseball bat on someone.

Brian Johnson: Major Nelson (Larry) was a great help to us. He suggested some of the outline and we just sort of took it from there.

Duncan Mackenzie: Yeah, Larry was great.

Coola: So how long do you estimate it took you to write this baby?

Brian Johnson: Well, some parts we took a few months on, but we really had to do the stuff on the interface at the very last minute. I actually started this as an Xbox book in the spring of last year

Duncan Mackenzie: That is always a problem when working on something that isn't released yet.

Coola: I can imagine this took some toll on your relationship with your family? I also imagine you guys being locked in a Microsoft dungeon somewhere with one lit candle and one pen to work with. Am I close?

Duncan Mackenzie: Nah, I do most of my writing (actually all of it) at home, although it does really cut into my sleep.

Brian Johnson: I wrote much of it sitting by the pool at the Hyatt Grand Cyprus in Orlando.

Duncan Mackenzie: Nice

Coola: There goes my one candle one pen theory. Is there a most popular tip in the book that people have read and said “holy crap, I would have never thought that was possible”?

Duncan Mackenzie: Well, one of the biggest areas that people seem surprised by the ability to hook it up to your PC to access your music, photos etc.

Brian Johnson: Adding a picture to the background is sort of cool. It's simple, but a lot of people don't know about it.

Coola: One of those being employees from Bungie.

Duncan Mackenzie: True, Frankie noticed that feature, made quite a nice background for his Xbox 360 too.

Brian Johnson: It's also cool that you can copy your network settings to your Xbox 360 using a USB memory key.

Coola: Interesting because as I thought this book would be “for dummies” or nubs (as I like to call them) – the book actually reveals some interesting things that even Bungie learned from. This is the snippet Bungie said that you posted on your blog:

Somebody handed me a copy of the Xbox 360 for Dummies yesterday. I was all, "How much of a dummy would you actually have to BE to not know how to use a console." Of course, the first page I opened had a handy tip that I never knew was possible. If you plug in a compatible device with an image on it, you can set that as your desktop pattern. How rad is that?

I also didn't know you could customize the blade colors, or the little submenu that comes up when you hit the Guide button. And it wasn't just me. A chorus of "whhhaaaaaas!?" went up when I demonstrated. There's probably a ton of other useful info in the book too.

And that’s coming from one of the most well-known developers in all developer land. That has to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside doesn’t it?

Duncan Mackenzie: Yep, a lot of people seem surprised that you *could* write a whole book about the Xbox 360, but it really is a very complex machine with a lot of the features of a PC, including downloading from the Internet, pulling music from your PC... and yet it ships with a manual that is around 20 pages. And yeah, having Frankie even pick up our book certainly made us happy... we both blogged about it that day.

Brian Johnson: Yeah, I was pretty excited about that. You feel nervous about a book until somebody you respect says something nice about it.

Coola: I also needed to mention that you guys are so pimpin that even models read your book. Do you know anything about that?

Screenshot
Click here to see more pics of the model making sweet love to Xbox 360 For Dummies.

Duncan Mackenzie: We did notice that actually... although we weren't invited to the photo shoot.

Coola: Shame on them.

Brian Johnson: I saw it and I sent a note to Duncan right away. I thought that was pretty cool.

Duncan Mackenzie: I had no idea writing a book about the Xbox 360 would attract the ladies.

Coola: Apparently so - do you ever show that off to your wives?

Brian Johnson: I showed my wife. She thought I was overly pleased with it. :0

Coola: I can see you in a t-shirt with the model on it prancing around the house. How lovely would that be.

Duncan Mackenzie: I showed Laura as well... and tried my best to appear unimpressed.

Coola: Attempt failed I assume.

Duncan Mackenzie: Yep, but the t-shirt idea is a good one.

Coola: So with the final publication of your book hitting the shelves, what are some of the next projects and ventures you guys are working on?

Duncan Mackenzie: Well... we are busy taking notes and finding additional information for the next revision of the book.

Brian Johnson: For now I'm researching (playing games) as much as possible.

Duncan Mackenzie: Ah yes, research. If there wasn't already a big book available for Oblivion, I'd be happy to write one... maybe "Oblivion for Dummies".

Brian Johnson: That would be cool.

Coola: That book is actually sitting right on my desk and what a behemoth that is. Couldn't imagine converting that into different languages for international releases.

Brian Johnson: I think it's out in a number of languages, but I'm not sure which ones.

Duncan Mackenzie: Yeah, I'm pretty sure the book is or will be available in Asia, as well as in Australia, the UK, etc..

Coola: Do you think that with your ties at Microsoft it would prove difficult to get approval to write "Wii for Dummies" or "Playstation 3 for Dummies"?

Duncan Mackenzie: That might be a bit of a problem.

Brian Johnson: Yeah, I don't think that would probably work. That's OK, we're Xbox 360 fanboys right?

Coola: Damn straight. I asked this question to Chris Satchell (General Manager of XNA at Microsoft) and he wussed out on it. So I’ll toss it to you guys. If there is one thing you would like to change about Microsoft, what would it be and why?

Duncan Mackenzie: Hmm.... free Xbox 360s for all the employees... ok, that's a cop-out too... hmmm...

Coola: Hah, that isn't actually such a bad idea.

Brian Johnson: I'm actually pretty happy with Microsoft. We get to do lots of really cool and fun stuff.

Coola: "Pretty" happy?

Duncan Mackenzie: I'm happy too!! Although sometimes I think we could move a bit "faster". The Xbox 360 is a good example of the benefits of moving fast, way faster than some other next-gen consoles.

Brian Johnson: I agree with that. I think it's getting better. It's a big place, but you can actually make stuff happen here and you don't have to be super powerful to do it, just persistent.

Coola: If there is one thing you want people to gain from reading Xbox 360 for dummies - what would it be?

Duncan Mackenzie: I'd want them to get more out of it than just the games, to explore the media and communication side of the machine.

Brian Johnson: I think gaming is good for kids. With that in mind, I want parents who don't know that much about it to be able to pick up the book and make the decision to let their kids get into gaming and know enough about it to be happy with that decision.

Coola: And finally but not least looking into the future, where do you see yourselves 10 years from now?

Duncan Mackenzie: Well, I can't really imagine leaving Microsoft. If you ever get bored or unhappy with one group, you can always move around internally... maybe I'll even end up in the gaming division?

Brian Johnson: I'll be pretty happy if I can keep playing games and writing book. I'll be even happier if I'm driving a Maserati.

Coola: Well said gentlemen, thank you for your time and I hope you get to that point someday. It was nice speaking to you guys!

Duncan Mackenzie: Thanks Coola!

Brian Johnson: Yes, thanks Coola!

Ha ha oh shit I was just waiting for that one. Yes I am a minority, but I am in college right now and you are dumb. And I don't have time to give you a history lesson, so you all I am gonna say is you are ignorant, and I am guessing you have quite a bit to learn about the real world.

Wow! How did you know? I did rob a bank! You must be a genius.

Your ignorance is hilarious! Really it is. I also love how the internet allows people act all hard and shit because they know there is no retribution. I would bet you money there is no way you would say what you just said to me to my face. And don't even say you would because you know its not true.

And just so you know, my family could have afforded it and I am on scholarship.

I was just asking. My point is do you thin its really possible to round up several million people and then send them back to their home countries? The answer to that is no, it would be a logistical and public relations nightmare. Not to mention it is a waste of valuable resources. And plus how are you going to be sure you have gotten everybody and that everybody you have gotten is illegal. They did something like this during the 1992 Los Angeles riots and used the chaos to kidnap a lot of immigrants and many of them are illegal. I do feel we need to slow down illegal immigration, not because the people don't deserve the chances the US offers but because although their illegal immigration may help them in the short run it hurts everyone in the long run. Illegal workers are exploited here by American companies, American's lose jobs, American schools are overcrowded, Mexico loses part of their population, the Mexican economy suffers because of people leaving. Mexico and the US really need to get together to be able to fix this problem, building a big wall and getting more national guard members to patrol the border isn't the solution to this problem.

It would definetly help with stopping people from coming into the country and then we need to at least try to find some of the mexicans who crossed the boarder and send em back

The answer to you mrfreeze is no we cant all get along. that is impossible humans will never be able to co-exsist with each other there wil always be hate, greed, and jealousy toward other nations.

and general harrison your right, putting a big wall up with guards wont do anything, BUT if the gaurds are given permission to just shoot anyone who tries to cross well theyd get the point and stop.

Talking about things has never solved problems, blowing the holy hell out of shit has.

Thats just ridiculous. Not only is it wrong on so many levels I am pretty sure it violates a ridiculous amount of International laws and treaties.

Like the problems have been solved in Iraq? But you are right talking about stuff doesn't solve things by itself, BUT it can get people to open their minds and see things from a different perspective. Talking about issues and the solutions to them needs to be followed up by actions, but constructive ones, not just blowing shit up, fighting, etc.

Oh yes lets drop you as a 6 year old kid in one of the poorest parts of a city with the least qualified teachers, the least funding, and crime all over the place and see how you do. Oh and I also forgot add onto that a society that is not set up to promote your advancement in it.

It ended the war with japan in WW2, im sure if we dropped a certain bomb in baghdad alot of our problems would be gone.

Well see that why we wait till they get across the border to shoot them, if we shoot them in mexico then bad things will come, not like im worrying about a mexican army attack (snickers) id just dont want to listen to people hear bitch about it.

Oh so no you are an advocate of killing millions of people too? Sure the A-bomb ended the war with Japan but the cost of that end was much too high, and lets hope nothing like that tradgedy ever happens again. And when I said the thing about breaking international treaties it doesn't matter if they are in our country or not because there are laws about immigration. And on top of that its just wrong.

Then it must be pretty tough to teach you because you are pretty damn ignorant.

im for anything that will end the war sooner, and get our boys back home. EVEN if it means the lives of innocent people, our troops lives are worth far more in my eyes.

Ok I'm back and nice to see everyones arguing like normal. You guys really need to just this topic aside. Ok we all know its harder for minorities in the U. S but this website isnt minoritiesintheus.com is it?

The real issue is that Sony just announced their Games would cost anywhere from 59.99 to 99.99 USD. So think of it this way:
(Im using all of this based on what I bought with the 360)
Ps3: 600
Extra Controller: 50
Ohter accesories: 100
2 games: about 160
Taxes: 70
Total cost for your PS3 on day one: Roughly 980 US Dollars
