ZUNE GETS IN THE RING July 29, 2006 -ANTONY BRUNO
Microsoft officials for the first time have confirmed that the Redmond, Wash.-based company is readying a portable music player and integrated service, shedding new light on a topic that has fueled rampant speculation in news reports and blog postings for weeks. In an exclusive first interview with Billboard, Chris Stephenson, Microsoft's new GM of marketing for MSN Entertainment Business, says the company will later this year launch Zune, an umbrella brand for what he says is "a family of hardware and software products" targeting various digital entertainment services. The first implementation of this will be the portable music player and digital music service, in what is the company's strongest effort yet to rein in Apple Computer's iTunes/iPod juggernaut, currently responsible for about 70% of the digital music market and 75% of the portable digital music player market.

I am not so sure of the name. I mean, "Zune", one would think it would choose a longlasting name. Zune sounds so generic. Need to come up with a better name than Zune, a quality bread-winning name at best.

Nope, the official name is Zune. I have a contact within the Zune army to confirm this... personally. Though the actual project name was "Argo". Do note that Zune is the name not just for the product but the service that empowers it.

i think it sounds kick-ass, hopefully ms wont do what they always do and add to much crud and features - keep it simple, music, movies, podcasts (or zunecasts), thats all it needs. bluetooth, wifi and that'll do me.

I think Zune is a fine name. Personally, I find that names don't really matter and the product itself is what will sell. It's MS people! I personally can't wait for this service to start. Luckily I stopped myself from buying an iPod. Now I cant wait to get a Zune. I don't know much about it, but I know MS produces quality stuff.

Dear MS, autosync of music and video through wireless, preferably the new wireless N standard supported. Video capture through dongle similar to many other Personal video players. Good battery life. No gaming needed for the music product. Windows and XBL friends list viewable along with new messages recieved. XBox360 invites. Bluetooth headset capable. If you really want to wow me I can call my Messanger Live contacts through this device. If you give me all that I will pay out my ass. Love, DrFred
