Xbox365 E3 Show Floor Impressions – Day one. By Andrew Carr (DarkLordOfChaos)
As “official” day one of the new E3 ’07 I thought I’d take a moment & check in with the loyal Xbox365 readers and give you a rundown of what I saw & experienced today. Aside from my day starting with a nasty drive to Santa Monica from Long Beach, I actually sat down & witnessed Fallout 3.

At the meeting, we were run through a demo of it by none other that it’s Executive Producer, Todd Howard. First thing off the bat, he let us know that the teaser trailer we saw was the opening cinematic & that it is all done in the game engine. The next big announcement? Well, brace yourselves for it. Fallout 3 is NOT an Isometric 3rd person adventure, no; it is a First person/third person, over the shoulder view, a la Oblivion. In fact, it looks an awful lot like oblivion, only with guns. It is running on a tweaked out oblivion engine & it shows. It looks intriguing, even though I was not the biggest Oblivion fan. We can look forward to shooting off our very own “personal Min Nukes” in the fall of 2008.

Next, it was off to Midway, for a hands on preview of Unreal Tournament 3, Blacksite: Area 51, & Stranglehold. UT3 was first & it was Beautiful. I was sat down in front of a PC with 21 inch LCD & a keyboard and mouse….. WHAT? Where is the 360 version? Right next to me was it running on the PS3…. Hello? The only answer I got was, “I don’t know. Ask Marketing.” That was the most pathetic answer I got all day to ANY question I asked. That aside, the game ran butter smooth & looked hot to boot. It is glaringly obvious that the unreal engine was made for this. The scenery was breathtaking and the Character models were complex. I was told at the start that the team was committed to making sure that the console versions had every feature that the PC did. This includes a level editor & get this…. A Character Editor. In the end, you will be able to customize the clothing & share it with your team so gave me the standard, “anything can change” and “the team is committed.” answers, so I’m crossing my fingers.
Blacksite: Area 51 was up next & I was skeptical. Like many others, I was underwhelmed with the demo that was released on Xbox Live not too long ago, boy was I wrong. They have cleaned up the graphics & clued me in on some very cool features that we all like to hear. On-line Co-op, was built in from the ground up. Alongside standard multiplayer modes you will be able to play the entire game with a friend over Xbox Live. One mission I played, I was on the ground directing my air support in a nearby helicopter, but should my friend be playing with me, he would be up in the helicopter. Every mission was built with this in mind. Blacksite is another shooter that is built with a modified Unreal 3 engine tactical decisions, they will literally run away from the fight. Gee, thanks. You can expect to see this title hitting shelves by Mid September, 2007.
It Tequila Time! Yes, I got my hands on Stranglehold; John Woo’s shooter staring none other than Chow Yun Fat & It is so dang fun that I can’t even put it into words. The bullet time play, here called Tequila Time is widely used while diving for cover & destroying everything in sight is superbly pulled off. The suspension of Disbelief is truly immersive here. You will have to just wait and see yourselves.

Well, that just barley scratches the surface, but I will be back later with an in depth report on Microsoft’s offerings this year. Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m off to catch some shut eye. Tomorrow is truly a day to “Jump in.”
