I don't know about that look. It looks pretty ugly for a *console*. And I was hoping that those leaked pictures of that ugly controller were fakes, but apparently they weren't. Unless this is a fake. Well, I guess looks aren't everything.

I like it we will know if this is really the final design.. or it is even is a real picture of it.. it looks like somebody could of set this all up.. with the glass and stuff. Think about it if somebody could of taken all this pictures, they could of taken much more pictures of the xbox 360, and celeberties/ etc. Plus look at the background.. its all black and soo dark.. if it really was at the mtv party you should expect some lights bright stuff...

I think it looks good. It is at least an improvement over the current X-Box design. I just hope it has room for a hard drive.

It's alright and all but the controller looks like crap. It seems they are trying to push their sidewinder design more. Than again didn't the original xbox have a controller that looked like that, you know with the longer controller handles. Perhaps they will nix that design and stick to the controller S scheme. I'd buy it anyways, as long as its' comfortable, but I just wanted to give my 2 sents...uh 360 sents.

anyone who thinks thats the final controler is an idiot. its probably very similar in design, but the plastic used and detail will be so much better on the real one. they always do this. my guess is thats the final system though. im not saying i like either of the designs as of now, but the controler is defintly not final.

go to the link and check that 360 pic. if you look at the side closeup there it says 40gb. in the other pics up above here it is showing what looks like a removable hard drive or somthing of that sort. ......... a removable 40gb hard drive possibly............

Yea theres prob. a couple USB ports in the slide door on the bottom of the system. So you can charge and all that stuff.

When i made my last comment there wasnt a USB cable pic there or maybe it just didnt load.

I dont like the position of the usb thing on the controller though.....to much like Dreamcast's controller.

the controller looks like a modified media center controller, the 360 looks like it's supposed to be part of your entertainment system, and compared to the first xbox this is much better

The only thing i am worried about is the wirelss controllers :(, hopefully the USB will act like a charger or maybe both let u play at the same time while charging. Im still not sure tho. What ever MS are doing they have a little trick up the sleve.

This thing is too ugly too look at. Design plays a big part in consumers minds so if the xbox next is gonna look like that, then i fear for MS. The controller is butt ugly, even if it is not the final version i dont see how putting a lil more detail in the controller can save that design. THe shape of it is what kills it, they should have sticked with the controller S. I dont want no f*cking wireless controller!!!please listen to me MS, i dont want to f*cking change the batteries or recharge them, its a f*cking hassle. And i want responsiveness in my controllers too and i know f*cking wireless sh*t always have problems so i dont want that. Or at least there should be a choice between wire or wireless. When I first seen the first leaks, I thought they looked like ass. But I know think the design is genious. Almost perfect except for the pointy handles of the controller, but will hold judgement till in my hand. And don't forget guys, there going to have faceplates so you can go for a look you want. Freakin marvelous. Big time awesome, can't wait for Thursday...

I just want to know if the face plates will preserve the concave or will it make it flat. I would prefer flat.

Actually jez1985, if you would actually look at the pictures, you would have seen a picture of a usb cord that connects to the controller to the Xbox. This is genious, not only are the controllers wireless, but they are also wired also, by attaching that usb cable. So people can actually enjoy both worlds and not have to worry. If you do not have badderies, then attach the cord.

Oh and how the hell is that a bad design. I think it looks awesome. It looks clean and professionally made, unlike the Playstation consoles.

I think the controller is the same, except the pointy handles, and the different button spots, but that is the only change. If you cannot handle a little change in the pointy handles, then I guess we will be seeing you then, because we all know Xbox 360 will be the best console again and will kill Sony next year.

I personaly think the xbox 360 looks Fantastic, for people who dont like it i think the disign just comes as a huge change to them in comparison to the 1st xbox , and those people dont like change. I also feel once everyone gets used to this design and lets it sink in i think they will learn to love it, this is how i felt when i first saw it.

to what problamer12 said about it should be coming out next year, if u think about it sony would not really have much time to change the ps3 they will have 2 to 3 months at the most and during those months sony will be puting together the ps3s and geting ready to ship them

Exactly, at this time it's best if Microsoft brings out the next xbox as soonas possible because Sony can't aford to change the PS3's design after having sank so much into it's develipment already. At most they could add another Cell CPU or upgread the GPU but not by enough to make it worth while.

why release it early cause everything is ready to ship, why not release for the christmas season, they didn't rush, the PS3 is probably ready for shelves, why not release it soon, well if your crazy you'd release it later, it's like a movie, the movie is finished before it comes out, the producers and the company choose a date that suits the best profit, and this is what MS is doing

I'm also assuming that people who think it looks bad haven't been to a tech shop(shopts like best buy for those who know what that is) recently cause most new DVD players are starting to look like this, they've ditched the black cases.

hey badgerswi i did look at the pictures, sorry maybe i didn't make my self clear what i was on about. I dont really care what the USB cable is aslong as it is a charger oh what. The only thing i have to pick about on the controller is that you have to plug it in on the front not the back or what ever is the front or the back for it??? and playing it as a wire controller i think that just would get in the way. But its still early days dont even know what its for yet?

That's a confusing statement. If it's wireless you don't have to plug it in anywhere. (i got a feeling you know this) If it's wired it may attach itself on the front USB ports that are assumingly hidden by the power button under the hatch.

This design is gonna kill them, they want to make the system appealing to JP gamers but this is a piece of crap...I'm almost certain tho that this is not the final design i mean they have to have a brain and notice that this shit looks like crap and it looks too freaking plain. And last but not least MS is defitely making a huge mistake by rushing into realising the console this year and try to compete with the ps2. I mean, its proven that graphics dont matter at all, the current xbox is much more capable than the ps2 (hardware wise) and it still couldnt even try to compete against it; so whats a stronger machine is gonna do? make better graphics? what for? they can still make great graphics as it is and still the ps2 is the better console why is it the better console? because it has the bestter games.(you dont think the ps2 is the better console? then why is it that it out sells the xbox each and everything week/month/day and year? if the xbox was the better system then all the developers would be making most of their games on it, not on the ps2)
Write this out MS is making the same mistakes sega did. Sega couldnt touch nintendo and then sony so they always rushed into making new and more powerful systems until they couldnt afford it anymore. Oh, the xbox has 3 core cpu's or somthing like that idk, the ps3 on a single chip has double and then some more than that(8 core cpu's on a single chip) so if sony decides to put two of those chips on a ps3 that would kill EVEN MORE the xbox2. Microsoft is being stupid releasing this thing too soon, because, even as we know graphics don't matter, the games library will be bigger and better in the ps3, because it will be released later, with a hardware that is a blast to program to... ooops!

Now serious, The design in good, not breathtaking, but good. Sure it doesn't look like my $3000 Bang & Oluffsen stereo, but it cost ten times less, so it's ok.

The Xbox control is by far the most confortable (at least ofr people with big hands) and i don't care how it looks as long it allows me hours of painless playing.

And for me, the hardware iside the box is the one that matter.

Spec wise, the 360 is amazing good ole raw processing power and an incredible chip by ati. This take us to cell. Cell chips are the future, so maybe in 5 years the first viable chips will hit market. Today the cell chip is too new, and there are a lot of tehcnical problems that will prevent it to reach its full potential.

And besides that it's very dificult to program for multitasking, imagine programing for the cell chips. And all this hype about the cell remember me to the emotion engine...

Well Zaratustra i guess you spoke too soon, apparently the one having problems( and it's not even released yet) is the xbox360 have you heard the rumors yet?...and im sure you already know that the cell chip have been tested already running at 4.6GHZ and all that good stuff right? so dont even worry about it having technical problems in the future, it looks like you have a lot more to worry about right now(present) with the xbox360 :) .... You also mentioned about the hassle its going to be to program for the ps3? ok, the ps2 is pretty damn difficult to program for, and still i see more and better games coming out for the ps2 so it looks like you wont have to worry about that either :). I have to agree with badgerswi on that one. Xbox games just blow ps2 games out the water and if u don't think so tell me this why all the games that come out for ps2 always come out for xbox, maybe not gt4 and a few others. But some like grand theft auto for example come out for xbox and look ten times better. Now lets look at xbox games coming to ps2 like, HALO 1 & 2, ninga giaden, forza motorsports, I mean really the list goes on and on, longer than ps2 list. Hell let the truth be told, Halo 2 blows away more than half of ps2 game selection anyway. Don't get me wrong about ps2 they do have a few good games. but xbox is getting ready to stick a size 13 up ps3's butt.

All calm down... I'l tell you my little story:

A long time ago I already found out, and its still the same these days. A ps2 is to be compared to a ps1 or n64 and a xbox is to be compared to a very very good gaming pc. Games like goldeneye came for the n64, and games like quake and half-life came to the pc. Should we compare them? I think not.

I have a ps2, and have all those good games (stay objective, all games named above are good games) for the ps2. I have a really crappy pc (p3 933mhz FX5200) which can barely play counterstrike at 30-40fps. So I looked for a better videocard (prices are for my country, The Netherlands). So what I needed to upgrade my pc is about this:

New Harddrive 100e
New Motherboard 100-150e
New Processor 150-200e
New Videocard 150-200e
New Memory 100-200e

thats about it. Kind of expensive huh :D

So thats when I started looking at the xbox (I might buy one in about a month). Why? You got a ps2? Well because I too want to play Halo 1,2, Project Gotham, Forza, Counter-Strike, Unreal Championship 1,2. And offcourse I could upgrade my pc, and play Counter-Strike and Halo 1, and Unreal 2004, but why would I if the xbox is only 150e and I can get almost all those games named above for each 20-30e?

Fact is, that my personal preference is racing games and shooting games. I just need both. What I really hate to see is that my ps2 is like breaking down at the moment. Try Killzone, some levels sounds dissapear because of memory shortage, or audio channel shortage or whatever. Play a game with 4 players and it will become very shocky. A lot of good shooting games like Counter-Strike, Halo 1,2, Doom 3, Unreal series all come to xbox and not to ps2. I would not want to miss GT3,4, Killzone, MGS and all those ps2 exclusives either. If you say you got ps2 AND xbox, you sound really rich, but in fact, the people who got those new p4 3,2ghz with 2gb ram and all that have much more expensive systems than a ps2+xbox! (300e total!).

The only thing withholding me from buying an xbox (next to my ps2, I will play both!) is that the next generation is coming up!

I love my ps2, and all those games, but these 1 lil thing that I just have to say:

Its not that people are defending there consoles here, its people trying to convince others that their taste for games is the best, and everyone should follow. Taste is not a thing to argue about, so let everyone make up their mind.

Now I hope the xbox360 and ps3 will be released in 2006, so I can still buy a cheap xbox and some cheapgames and knock myself out, but thats probably not going to happen, so I will just watch mtv upcoming friday and see where my money needs to go to :)

About the cell running already, you're correct, still if you read the comments of experts (not fanboys) saying that there are still big difficulties to solve in order to take advantage of the cell huge potential. Yes there are good games coming now to the ps3, all this years after it was released... they finally get to understand how to take advantage of the "amazing" emotion engine...
Ok it's natural to games improve over time, but the point is that it's is way more difficulto program to ps2 than to xbox, and it will be even more difficult to program for the cell.

About the 360's current problems, is because they are already testing it, not developing the technology... it's natural... and besides that a lot are promoted and exagerated by fanboys...(ehem)

And by the way i was an Ati user until recently when i get my sli game rig.... wich probably will be blown away by mi 300 usd next console.

I mean.. you get the point. For me its really a no-brainer. You like ps2 games, buy a ps2, You like xbox games, buy an xbox. You wanna play both (like me) buy both!

It is no discussion whether the xbox is better than the ps2.. it just is.
It is also no discussion that you have to choose for games and not hardware. If you just love gran turismo, than a faster xbox without gran turismo won't make you happy.

There is really not so much to say about the upcoming devices until they reveal all of their specs (ps3 especially). It is definetly true that programming for the ps2 (and probably ps3) is harder, but when you line up the games it seems to not have mattered that much at all.

I am just very excited about friday when the xbox show will be shown here on MTV. So the xbox 360 is set for 2005 november and the ps3 is set for 2006 right?

Let's say that this little marvel costs sony 1000 usd, ans they sell it for 400. The 600 difference should be payed by the game fees.

So let's say than in order to convice developers for programing for the cell they charge a fee of 10%, something like $6 usd per game. So sony is planning that ps3 buyers are buying at least 100 games? That's just for grtting even.

Or they are going to sell the ps3 for $800... in that case, would you pay the double for 50% better graphics, and sacrifice the online gaming?

When PS1 and PS2 came out, they said it was going to have more than what they really released. Just like the other 2 consoles of their, Sony is only going to give out 50% of what they stated at E3. 256 MB will turn into 128 MB each. Not to mention, the consoles will be easily broken in 6 to 10 months time, forcing people to buy another one.

Did Sony even mention anything about them adopting Microsoft way of doing online? If they don't then the Sony online is dead. We all know gameshark will still be available to use on Sony, so the cheating will be there more so than the Xbox 360. We all know Xbox can better handle the cheaters than Sony can. And if Sony keeps the open structure of their online service (if service is what you want to call it, more like crap) means you playing one game, you will not be able to see your friends in other games. Are they even going to intregrate the services? Obviously not, costs to much money for them to want to do. That is why Microsoft will win.

its the name, and it all started with PS1, PS1 outthrone nintendo because of software piracy, n64 cartridges could not be pirated but the ps disc were very cheap to reproduce and cost $2 ( even less at the end $1.6)against $50-$60 for nintendo original catridges, ALMOST ALL PS1 systems in our region use pirated disc. That is why the playstation name stands out (at least in our region don't know for others, priracy made SONY PLAYSTATION), and is the same story with xbox and ps2 lots of ps2 pirated software.

Microsoft owns the pc world, so they are in no hurry to come up with new stuff. I mean, why work harder to make new stuff, when you are racking in the money with the old stuff. In a way it is a Microsoft is like a monopoly in the pc world. Didn't mean to offend anyone, just sharing my view, nothing beats pirated materials costwise be it console games, software and DVDs. In our part of the world where piracy is rampant that's the PS (Pirate Station) story. As stated above, only in our area. I do own PS2 and and XBox, between the two Xbox is the better system no doubt about it, but PS3 and XBOX 360 we just have to wait and see.

When asked about the difference in concept between Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, Kutaragi commented, "I can understand the [Xbox 360's] approach of adopting multiple, all-purpose processors. However, that will just raise integer calculation capabilities, and it will only benefit general applications. It will increase the machine's capabilities as an all-purpose computer, but it won't change the types of entertainment. On the other hand, the Cell (which is said to specialize in floating point calculations in comparison to normal CPUs) was created to 'generate,' or, in other words, to produce virtual objects and phenomenons inside the computer."

"We want to realize a new future in entertainment with the use of computers. For example, we showed the demo with the ducks moving in a physics simulation during the press conference. That was a virtual world that was being 'generated' inside the PS3 [using the Cell's processing power]. Just raising the graphics capabilities and output resolution won't change anything from the current world of video game consoles," said Kutaragi. He went on to say that Microsoft's new game console is more of an "Xbox 1.5" than a new console, in the sense that it seems like an extension of the original Xbox.

Kutaragi gave one example of how the PS3's powerful calculation abilities and broadband network connection could be used for new and original entertainment endeavors.

"Users will be able to store their content in an online storage server called the 'Cell Storage.' And the Cell processor, when it's not being used, can refine the content's quality. We call it the 'aging' process. For example, users can 'age' their Standard Definition (SD) video and up-convert it to High Definition (HD) video. We have many plans [for the PS3], but this 'Cell Storage' service is something that we definitely intend to launch. By using the Cell's security feature, users will be able to rip DVDs that include copyright protection and lay it in the storage area to refine its video quality."

Even though this next xbox doesnt look like a power hungry monster as the original its still gonna kick ass. Really, I think the idea behind the wireless controllers is great cuz im always getting the original cont. cords into a big mess of spaghetti. I hope the new system has the ability to play games from the original box. If it dont, thats ok but i dont really want to pay 55$ 4 a new game - just cuz im lazy.
The look of the new box I think brings more momentum with it by almost setting a standard for other systems to follow. Back when ps2 (i know i shouldnt mention such a hideous name) came out it was more or less a leader in its generation which is wat the 360 can b.

Well, I have just read thru the entire lot of comments on this site, some providing entertainment, some being quite idiotic and pointless! anyway, here's my 10c worth!

Firstly, I own an xbox and a PS2. both machines have their merits, but my overall preference is for the xbox. Just for the fact that online it rocks in comparison to PS2.

When it comes to understanding how the games market (and especially consoles) works, you really have to take into account what has happened before - its called learning from history! You also have to appreciate where the background of the 2 main companies lie, and where their areas of expertise are:

Sony - a huge electronics giant, who were able to capitalise on flooding the market with a relatively cheap machine (PS1) and developing links to a whole load of developers who were becoming very dienfranchised with the console market at the time being dominated by nintendo and sega. they were the only company who were willing to open the market to all developers at the time, when SEGA and Nintendo were too busy battling with each other to notice. end result = sega no longer making consoles, and nintendo only holding a small niche market. (though still hanging on in Japan). PS2 sold millions on the back of the PS1, because they blew the market wide open over 10 years ago. well done to them!

Microsoft = The worlds biggest software manufacturer, also closely linked with most of the biggest computer manufacturers on the planet. the best expertise in software development and internet development there is. they recognise that the console market is growing fast (coming to the point where it rivals the PC gaming market - where they have big influence) they think "Hey, a market we better get into, otherwise our control of the internet will be slipping away" therefore they develop the xbox, a console designed to make the most of online gaming when there was nothing really available at the time to do so. they got it right in some respects, but not all. overall history of about 5 years in the market

this history itself explains why there is more PS machines out there than xbox, there has been so much more time to sell them. so achieving 25% market share in 5 years is one hell of an achievement!

Microsoft are world beaters at providing online services, Sony are world beaters at providing Electronic gadgetry (and also dont forget the SONY publishing empire for the entertainment side of things!)

Next bit to think about is the way gaming will develop. most people acknowledge that the way forward is online. on this side Microsoft will always have the edge on the expertise, and they are gradually turning the developers over to their way of thinking - just look at some of the defections over the past year or so from the Sony developer camp. Also, they recognise that the way to open the market further is to bring more PC games to the console market - Unreal, Half Life, Doom etc. thats the way they are heading!

Sony are masters of producing the games that fit the wider market as a whole, instantly accessible, and pretty easy to play (summarised as "Arcadie", for want of a better phrase!) there are examples of more in depth games, but not many really. The reason that the XBOX only games dont go to PS, and vice versa is that Microsoft and Sony put the mockers on it, not that the developers themeselves stop it happening.

So, now we have an interesting time, XBOX360 on the way this year, PS3 next year. Man this is an exciting time to be a gamer! let battle commence! An important rule to remember is that it is not the console that makes the games good, its the games that make the console good.
