Dinosaur Hunting

I can't tell you how many times I've been to a remote island that was overrun with dinosaurs. Every time it happens to me there is only one thought going through my mind: why can't I hunt these overgrown lizards? Well, Metro 3d has come to my rescue with Dinosaur Hunting. Dinosaur Hunting pits man against that ageless archenemy, the dinosaur. I know that dinosaurs have affected all of us in some way; whether it is the inconvenience of finding the family pet missing or having your brand new BMW 5 series crushed by a Brachiosaurus, we have all felt the sting of dinosaurs gone wild.

Enter dinosaur hunting, the game that allows you to incapacitate dinosaurs at will. Okay, so you're actually trying to help save them, but we'll get to that later. The story begins with the revelation that dinosaurs have been discovered alive and well in an Amazonian rainforest by a British geologist name Dr. Norton Klast. Dr. Klast had disappeared in the Guiana Highlands in 1907. Three years later, in 1910, he was rescued from deep within the Highlands. He shared his discovery with no one, except his closest friend, Lord Andrew Karnegee. He told Lord Andrew of his exploration into Table Mountain, a previously unexplored region of the world that had existed in complete isolation, and his subsequent discovery of dinosaurs.

The friends had kept the discovery secret, until now. The volcanoes of the Guiana Highlands are becoming active once again. The dinosaurs must be moved to the safety of another location or they will once again face extinction. Lord Andrew has formed the Ark Foundation, a loose-knit group whose primary objective is to protect the dinosaurs. The Dinosaur Protection Plan is being carried out by a small group of wealthy people location around the globe, in utmost secrecy.

The first team of 52 hunters, armed with tranquilizers, was dispatched with disastrous results. Only four came back alive. The dinosaurs were much more ferocious and dangerous than had been expected. The Ark Foundation then decided to send in a small group of the most elite hunters in the world. The four members are:

  • Malone, United States
Known as the "World's Greatest Hunter", Malone displays marksmanship bordering on divine inspiration. He is credited for resolving the "Mountain of Tragedy" incident in Canada, as well as accompanying the adventurer Robert E. Peary in the North Pole expedition of 1909.
  • Sir Arthur, England
Sir Arthur is the author of the world-famous "Sherlock Holmes" detective stories. He is skilled at many sports, including his favorite: boxing. He has great ambition toward exploration. He heard about Malone from an adventurer friend and became interested in his exploits.
  • Jeanne, France
Jeanne is one of six grandchildren of the great adventurer Jules-Sebastian Dumont. The gun given to her by her father was a major influence in her choice to join the hunting profession. She has great pride but also has a hard time expressing herself. She is self-protective, and conflicts tend to arise between herself and others.
  • Gregory, Canada
A strong hunter, Gregory grew up with guns. He's talented, but he is obsessed with money and fame. His self-centered personality may cause trouble sometimes. He's still humiliated that the "Mountain of Tragedy" incident was solved by Malone, when it happened on his home turf, Canada.
The weapons available throughout the game fall into three categories: handguns, rifles and shotguns. All of the weapons are loaded with only tranquilizers. Handguns are good for delivering individual tranquilizer shots. They aren't that powerful, however, so they're only minimally effective on medium to large dinosaurs. Handguns are best used against smaller dinosaurs. Rifles have the longest range and are best suited for shooting dinosaurs from a distance. Because a rifle lets you shoot at dinosaurs without being noticed, it's very effective in capturing dinosaurs safely once you learn how to use it. A rifle is usually loaded with normal tranquilizers, but you can load it with a custom stun shell by mixing your own red (R), green (G) and blue (B) ingredients. Shotguns don't have a very long range, but one shot covers a broad area. In other words, a shotgun is good for shooting at multiple targets. It's effective when a group of small, fierce dinosaurs attack, or when you have to shoot at a target that is moving so fast it would be difficult to take aim with a handgun.

The controls in Dinosaur Hunting are straight forward and comfortable. The left thumbstick moves the character; the right trigger fires the weapon. The Y button toggles between normal and scope view, while the X button is pressed to aim and use the shotgun. Black and white buttons us items, and the right thumbstick controls the camera.

One unique feature of the game is the ability and requirement of making your own stun shells. Different dinosaurs require different combinations, and you must find the correct one. If you shoot a dinosaur with the wrong combination, you can either injure the dinosaur or it will have no affect on the dinosaur, making you a nice mid-morning snack.

Dinosaur Hunting is shaping up to be a fun, unique game that offers plenty of action. The game is a fast paced shooter with pretty good story to back it up. Look for Dinosaur Hunting on store shelves in February/March.
