Grabbed by the Ghoulies

Rare is alive and kicking, and ready to unleash Grabbed by the Ghoulies on the gaming world. Grabbed by the Ghoulies is an action/adventure game that takes place inside the haunted mansion of Barron Von Ghoul, and evil dude who wants nothing more than to scare you silly. You trek your way through the Barron's home, aptly named Ghoulhaven Hall, as the tow-headed Cooper, and wouldn't you know it, he has stolen your beautiful girlfriend Amber. To save your lovely lady, you must traverse over 50 rooms, solve puzzles and challenges, and kick some ghoulish butt using your fists and over 100 interactive objects.

The story is split into five chapters presented in a storybook fashion. Each chapter leads you into different rooms of the house. In these rooms you must complete the task at hand before you can advance to the next room. Sometime the task includes having to find a key to unlock the door to your next destination. The path may lead to a new and exciting room, or it may lead you back to the room you just came from to complete another task. Along the way you will encounter "Super Scary Shocks". You can overcome Super Scary Shocks by pressing a button sequence that is presented to you on-screen. If you do not get the sequence done in time, you will then be scared. When you are scared, you sustain twice the damage.

Combat is extremely straight forward - the left thumbstick is used to move around and the right thumbstick is used to execute attacks. The A button is the pickup/use button; the B button is used to drop items. Many of the interactive objects that are presented throughout the game can also be used as weapons. You can pick up a pool cue are thrash some skeletons until it breaks, or you can pick up a chair whack a mummy over the head, shattering it instantly. The left and right triggers are used to rotate the camera. This is especially useful if you are trying to find out who or what is sneaking up on you.

Also present throughout the game are Challenge Rooms. In these rooms you must complete a challenge requirement. The challenge requirement is displayed on screen and a player cannot exit the room until the challenge is complete. Once you complete the challenge, the exit door is accessible and you can move on.

Types of challenges include:
  • One Breed - Defeat all Ghoulies of a specific breed.
  • Defeat All - Duh.
  • No Weapon - Defeat all Ghoulies without using any weapons.
  • Weapons Only - I think you can guess this one.

  • Don't Get Hit - Keep guessing, it has something to do with not getting hit.
  • Next One Different - Do not defeat the same ghoulie two times in a row.
  • Number - Defeat a certain number of Ghoulies of a specific breed.
  • Number (Any Breed) - I think you know this one.
  • Don't Defeat - Spare the lives of a certain type of Ghoulie.
  • Don't Defeat Any - Spare them all!!! Don't worry, it actually works.
  • Limited Attacks - Complete the challenge room using only certain attacks.
  • No Damage - Defeat the Ghoulies without suffering any damage.
  • Survive - Stay alive for a certain amount of time.
  • Time Limit - Complete challenge within the allotted time. This challenge can be added to any other challenge.
If you mess up in the challenge room or break one of the rules, the Grim Reaper pays you a visit. One touch from the Grim Reaper and you're on your back, passed out, and starting the level over. As the game progresses, the challenges get more difficult and hectic.

Grabbed by the Ghoulies is shaping up to be another fine example of Rare's ability to create a game that is fun for all ages. Grabbed by the Ghoulies has humor, action, a great storyline excellent visuals. The fully interactive environments are fun to explore and give you unlimited weapons to dispose of the Barron's Ghoulies. Grabbed by the Ghoulies will be in stores this fall, so lock up your girlfriend, get your ghoulie stompin' boots ready and help Cooper unleash the animated fury on Barron Von Ghoul.

This is going to be a "dimoand in the ruff" game. What I mean is that the majority will brush this game off as "kiddie" or stupid cause you don´t shoot anyone, but for the people that do pick it up, people like me, will probably have a great gaming experience with this game.

I dunno. I still don´t find anything appealing in this game, and I actually LIKE kiddie games. Maybe it´s the overall art and design that I find uninspiring. I´ll probably end up giving it a chance, though and at least rent it.

Nintendo of America released a statement today saying sales of the GameCube quadrupled as a result of the recent price reduction of the console to $99.99.

"Clearly, this move is what game players desired,” said George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications of Nintendo of America, “and also what our retail partners wanted. We´re already receiving requests for additional shipments of Nintendo GameCube systems between now and the holidays."

Nintendo has been aggressively marketing its game console this holiday season, with 100+ titles launching before the end of the year, and a $50 million marketing campaign anchored with the slogan “Who Are You?” The new price, combined with much-anticipated titles like Mario Kart: Double Dash!! will be sure to lure new consumers to Nintendo’s console.

according to the article, the right stick is used for the attack, the direction you press it in will determine what type of attack you inflict on the enemy. the a and b buttons are used for picking up and dropping items

this game LOOKED lame and stupid, but i played it for awhile and its pretty good. the beginning is easy and dumb, until you get to the end of the 1st chapter. the only things i really don´t like about the game are the way the vampires can grab you and pull you into the box and YOU CAN NOT GET OUT!!!
other than that, the game is good...i don´t think that it´s a very good game for kiddies though. it is tough in some parts, and i had to play through the area 3 or 4 times before beating them.
