Blasts From the Past!

by Hedgehog
3/16/2003
Hello again XBOX365, Hedgehog Boy reporting in after another madcap week of adventures! After making another tour of the Industry the Hedgehog has noticed an interesting trend about 2003. That this is indeed the year of the sequels! From everywhere, were getting new remakes of classic games or sequels to new franchises created during this console war. From Ninja Gaiden, to Ghouls & Ghosts, and Ico to Amped, everybody seems to be looking to the past to give the future some life!

What's in a Name? There's been alot of talk about the next generation XBOX in production right now in Redmond. Of considerable interest recently has been the name of Microsoft's second console! Many have come to beleive that this mysterious successor will be called XBOX Next, especially after the domain name was registered on the web a few weeks back. Well after several high profile calls and inquiries the Hedgehog can tell you that it won't be called XBOX Next.

This really is a no brainer poeple! After all, after the game system came out the name would work anymore because it would no longer be the "NEXT" console, it would be the current one! My sources say that the title XBOX Next is simply a product place holder name, much like how everyone called XBOX's online startegy "XBOX Online" before Live was unveiled. As to what the system will be called, my sources say it could be something as simple as "X2"!
The Hedgehog's Take- X2 huh? Well, it sounds better than PS3, I like it already!

Rumor Followup: Shenmue 3 Being right is always a real ego booster and the Hedgehog has had independant confirmation that he was on the ball yet again! XBOX Nation issue 7 and Shenmuedojo.com has confirmed what the Hedgehog reported several weeks ago. That Shenmue 3 is indeed in the works and that Yu Susuki has retired the reigns on the project! Shin Ishikawa is now the the new driver behind the epic series and hopefully we'll see the game at E3!
The Hedgehog's Take- The Hedgehog never really got into this life sim game, but I'm certain there are plenty of gamers around here who have!

It's Never to Late to Start! When it comes to Live support, the only major U.S. player not onboard that Orange train is EA! Now while many would like to believe that EA just hates XBOX and wants it to fail this isn't the case at all. EA has just spent a whole lot of greenbacks building it's own online network of servers and wants to actually use them! However, things change quickly in this indudstry! EA recently had to write off most of its online network after its flagship game, "The Sims Online" failed to bring up sales! This means that EA now needs another network to host its online titles!
The Hedgehog's Take- HMMM, I'm not going to forgive EA just yet; but Nascar Thunder with support for 20 racers on Live at once would be a nice start!

The Legend Reborn? EA hasn't said anything about the next James Bond game and it has to get you wondering. Add rumors that EA is ressurecting the legendary Goldeneye franchise and every shooter fan to ever wield a controller should perk up. Now before we all go into spasms of glee remember that the N64's classic shooter was created by Rare, who is now owned by Microsoft! As such even if the franchise was ressurected the minds behind the original wouldn't be behind the wheel; in fact the only similarity between the new game and the old would be the name!
The Hedgehog's Take- Still, Goldeneye is Goldeneye; and the name alone will sell a million copies!

Bringing back old franchises is always a nice thing to see. I myself was tickled blue when Panzer Dragoon was reborn. Let's just hope that we also get plenty of fresh new faces along with the old ones as well. Remakes are nice, but the past is still the past and it's best to not dig too much of it up!

Shenmue 3! That´s great news, but to be honest I still haven´t gotten very far with Shenmue2. Everytime I play it takes over my life so I pack it up and don´t touch it for at least a month. I fear this game. EA still sucks, Live or no Live they ust port PS2 games.

I´m confused. EA shut down their online network because the Sims didn´t live up to sales expectations? Why is it that the sims online offical homepage is still up?

http://www.ea.com/eagames/official/thesimsonline/home/index.jsp

Is EA outsourcing the hosting required to run the game???

I´ve changed the wording of that news bit a bit gamers! EA hasn´t shut down the service, you can still play the Sims Online. EA just isn´t turning any kind of profit from the service and is in big trouble financial wise with it!

I would @!*% like to say I really love this industry rumors section on the site. It has a lot of good gossip and is interesting to read. I do have a question though.

Hedgehog, do you at least look once over your post to see if there are any errors or do you just type and post it immediately. I have seen plenty of errors on your rumors section that are slowly fixed after a couple of days. I´m just curious.

Bleu, I think there are a few things you need to understand!

1. Coranto 1.2, the system we use to post news to the site DOES NOT have a spell Check or Grammar check program. So any errors I make are caught only after I make the post!

2. I usually do this column late Sunday night so give me some slack man, I´m tired!

3. Internet columnists are notorious when it comes to grammatical errors! Just check any major website and see for your self!

The technology that Microsoft would have to compete with the PS3 would have to be more or as powerful as Sony claims their PS3 to be (1000x faster than PS2). Cell computing would only realize its full potential if a lot of PS3 users adopt broadband.

Since Microsoft already has much success with Xbox Live, will the next Xbox generation go the way of parallel / grid computing also? Or do you think they will run into patent problems with Sony/Toshiba/IBM with the PS3?

Hedgehog, what are your thoughts on this?

actually about the the goldeneye thing, the makers of the original golden eye and perfect dark left rare and formed Free Radical and most recently did time splitters 2 (crap). so "the minds behind the original" won´t be working on any Xbox exclusive stuff anyway

Well, I hope that Goldeneye turns out good, because we all know what happens when different development teams take the reigns of an old game. Just as long as its still GOldeneye, but I know the original Goldeneye team when I play a game by them. That is the @!*% thing i said about the Time Splitters 2 demo of many XBox mags past. I would rather Free Radical get the darned license and redo the blasted thing from ground up. But we can only wish I think. AS far as Shenmue goes, I liked it, but as I said earlier(in so many words) that a game´s creator is like the ´artist´ of the game. But anyway I hope that they do a good job on Shenmue 3. So, the next Xbox´s name is still in question..how sweet. Just play this one and pray that backwards compatibility is there. Because Sony isnt the @!*% company that did backwards compatibility, Sega hs done it with the classic Master System to/Genesis adapter. Anyone care to remember ? Besides as far as I am comcerned about the PS3, for you PS2 FB´s out there, Sony´s getting help in making their console. So architectually it might be a little different than the current PSX V1.8(Ps2 in lamen terms). They however had better put backwards compatibility, or else Sony´s release numbers would most definitely suck. Speaking of which, remember all that hardware trouble within the launch..that is if you where lucky enough to grab a a PS2 on release. So gamers, just sit back, play Xbox , and psitol whip baddies Sam Fisher style!! ANd whatever game EA makes online comapatible with Live...just play it and hope for something better. Because whether they like it or not, they will be making a XBL compatible title, because Sony´s online stuff reek of heinosity !!

Im looking forward to Shenmue 3, and it being created from the ground up on XBOX harware should make it the most impressive game visually of any game ever created just as Shenmue 1 was on the dreamcast hardware, however i have one worry. Its not going to be created by the same guy. Thats like having Star Wars created by the guy who directs Star Trek. Its like a sin. I dont understnad why Suzuki wants to drop his greatest project ever. Im still going to buy it and worship it when it releases, but its sad to think the same guy isnt producing it. They better make this game more visually impressive than Shenmue 2. Being a port of a dreamcast game is no longer an excuse for holding back on the hardware the XBOX offers this time around

Uh, Not to defend EA´s blatant stupidity or anything but how many have you guys have actually played that game on the PC? Sure it´s good, but it has more buttons than an F117 Nighthawk! I can understand why the game was cancelled, the control localization would be a nightmare!

Well then I can understand Hedge....they wouldve made the game compatible with that big hunk of controller/game from capcom. EA is just like any other company, they want to make money. But, if the PS2 had a HD @!*% then things wouldve been completely different..in my humble opinion. Needless to say, watch what happens when the PS2´s Hard Disk gets released outside of Japan. EA if your´re reading my post..you are missing a bundle(and window) of opportunity(also money) by not making a EA Sports game for Xbox. But then again, they need to pay attention to a system who has a @!*% party sports crap entitled ´989 Studios´. I mean my gosh, has anyone except for me even played NFL Xtreme for the original PSX ?
