The idea of blazing around in a ton of different SUV's sounds like a cool idea. So much so that GOD and Infogrames have both published a 4x4 racing title for Xbox.
Heading straight into the game, there are plenty of options to choose from - more vehicles than I knew existed and with plenty of option extras to keep even Crocodile Dundee happy (If you've seen the Subaru Outback ads you'll know where I'm coming from).
1st noticable absentee: Ford (WTF????) Hang on, this is an off roading title - and Ford do produce the Explorer, Expedition and Excursion, not forgetting the little Escape... hmmm, something doesnt quite add up.
Kicking into the game, I immediately tried to change the view point, I generally like the camera position to be about 20 feet behind the car (sorry, 4x4) so I can see what's going on around me, without losing the nice Xbox detailed graphics.... Guess what:
2nd noticable absentee: Camera modes. - There are only 3 modes to chose from - inside, outside and blimp view. This came as a real surprise to me - I'm used to 5 or 6 or more view points, something definately doesnt add up.
Racing around Eqypt, the Sphinx looks ok, the Pyramids not too bad, but whats this.....
3rd noticable absentee:Engine tones. - Is it just me, or does the Jeep Wrangler sound identical to the Lexus RX300? I've figured out what's wrong here: Rushed Game.
Without harping on, of the 12 Xbox titles I've played in detail, 4x4 Evo2 looks, and feels rushed. The DC version a couple of years ago was cool and the gang, nice gamplay, nice graphics, good attention to detail, but simple things like the tracks moving around on the constuction diggers has been missed - they simply float along....
I need to come back to this game in a couple of weeks, to make sure it's not just my imagination thats getting in the way. I was hyped up about this title, and felt let down. My advice at the moment is to head on down to Blockbusters (or somewhere like that) and rent 4x4 Evo2, then you can work out if I'm talking smack - but not let it cost you 50 bucks in the process...
Sorry Terminal Reality, I really feel as though GOD pushed you with the timing of this.
