Halo |

Having played Halo on and off for several months, I pretty much knew what to expect from the final version of this game. I knew this Halo was going to be an instant success, but the final cut of Halo succeeded passing my high expectations.
I was left dumbfounded when I flipped Halo. I just couldn't believe how good the game was. You see, while playing the game I was constantly thinking to myself: 'this game is getting better and better. Could it possibly end up being the best videogame ever created?' I refused to answer that question to myself until I passed Halo. You know how many games are: you feel they are great, but the last dash towards the finish line somehow screws many good games up. Let me tell you, that wasn't the case with Halo. Finally passing the game, and sitting back, watching the ending, I said out loud: "this is the best game ever created." I truly felt that.
No other game I have ever played immersed me in a role such as Halo did. No other game created such an environment as to actually feel you were there, on Halo, fighting for your life, and your race. Enough of my ranting, let me tell you why this game is the best game ever created.
Halo's gameplay is the catch in getting you to playing this gem of a game. The story involves you, Master Chief, being taken out of his cryogenic sleep on the mothership to battle, and defeat the alien race known as the Covenant. You must accomplish this task with your superior skills, and helpful AI. The game starts you off with just a simple hand gun, but as the game progresses, you acquire devasting weapons, such as a sniper rifle, and a bazooka. You also have a melee attack, using the butt of your equipped weapon, for CQB: close quarters combat. Halo's NPC's: non playable characters, aren't just for show, like in other games where your AI controlled partners sometimes hinder you, not help you. In Halo in more than one occasion you have to rely on them from getting you out of tough situations. It's also helpful that these NPC's aren't stupid either. They will actually flank the enemy, and do strafing manoeuvres to get the enemy out of their hiding places. You see their grenades being lobbed at the enemy, as they run back and avoid fire. It's very reassuring to see your fellow Marines backing you up. You feel as if you are truly involved in a real struggle, and not playing some game where you're a loner who defeats an entire alien race all by yourself. Halo also mixes up the action in this FPS by involving a huge assortment of vehicles for you to accomplish the goal of defeating the Covenant. Your most widely used vehicle in Halo will be the "Warthog". This LAV, light armored vehicle, can sit one passenger, and a gunner on top of a chain gun to help you kill those alien baddies. The game's physics truly show their worth while using the Warthog. Tight turns will spin the Warthog around very quickly, and forcefully. Jumping onto river streams, and using a hill as a ramp to send your Warthog into mid-air all seems very realistic. The car reacts to your every command very precisely. Shooting the mounted gun, and seeing those hundreds of shells drop in a fine parabola shape, and then bounce in the ground, looks very realistic.
Other vehicles include tanks, alien type scooters, and flying alien vehicles that get you to high places. All in all you can almost categorize Halo's use of vehicles as a second game, because the use of them is so in-depth, and does not appear secondary to the main objective. Without those vehicles you will never succeed in defeating the Covenant. The cool feature about Halo's gameplay is that it relies on "always action." That means that you will not have those long treks across a level to find the enemy. As a matter of fact, the enemy comes and finds you. There is always something to shoot in Halo, and that makes the game very entertaining up to the very last minute.
As I satiated before, this game relies heavily on tactics. The aliens are as smart as your AI. They will not rush you from a distance. They will not expose themselves for long periods of time if they know enemies are near by. They think as a group, and act like one too. They have will form in groups, and pin you down by keeping constant fire on you, and lobbing grenades into your path so as to keep you aware they know you are there. Like the aliens, you too have to use flanking, shooting, and grenade throwing manoeuvres to best the enemy. Halo finally makes good use of AI by creating smart enemies and friends that think of saving their own ass.
Halo's graphics are simply jaw dropping. From the start of Halo you see how much effort was put into making this game so damn beautiful. Your character, and the environment he plays in, is just full of polygons. Your character, and the vehicles, and levels he plays in are extremely well textured. Moving next to the Warthog and seeing all those bumps on the metal makes me go insane!! I can't believe how beautiful the world of Halo looks. The water effects are very dazzling. The sky is reflected very nicely from that crystal clear H20. Speaking of the sky, it's gorgeous. I swear, I stood just gawking at the beautiful sky on more than one occasion when I arrived in Halo. Another striking feature is Halo itself. Seeing the curve of Halo, as it reaches into the sky, and then comes back down again, is truly an incredible experience. I've never been that blown away by a single environment in a game. Smoke and fog are well made in Halo. One of the best uses of smoke in Halo is from the contrails of fragmentary grenades, or bazooka rounds, being launched at the enemy. The use of smoke in the sniper rifle is also very neat. Fog is used well, especially early on the game to create a very creepy atmosphere. The lighting effects should go without saying that they are spectacular, but I'll say it anyway. Never before did I think that light from a flashlight could be accurately modelled in a game. Well, Halo went on to disprove me on that. The parabolic shape of the light hitting a wall is very euphoric. Having it illuminate your way by falling to the floor and flooding the surrounding area with ambient light is an experience in itself. The lighting effects also show their worth when night falls in Halo.
The muzzle flashes from your guns illuminate the surrounding area very realistically. grenades and other lights on buildings and vehicles realistically light up the surrounding area, but doesn't exaggerate it. One of the only few gripes I could find with Halo's graphics are the fact that the trees aren't modelled as best as they could have been. they seem plain, and although they do sway back and forth with the wind, shells hitting the trees seem not to affect them at all. It would have been nice if the trees could be cut down with machine gun fire, or grenade explosions. Still, that's just a small graphical downfall in an otherwise graphically perfect game.
Halo's sound is very well done. Grenades exploding, Tanks shooting off shells, and the crack of an Alien with your shotgun in the head is well done. Running in corridors shows nice echo effects. Oh, and let's not forget the death screams of the Covenant as a plasma grenade sticks to their leg, and they bust out in a helpless sprint to save their hide. hehe. I love that sound.
The ability to play Halo's single player game with 2 people in cooperative mode is yet another great addition to an already monumental game. Having a buddy at your side to help you kill those alien bad asses helps a great deal. Yelling out orders to your partner, just like how your AI marines do, absorbs you even more into Halo's world. Halo never short changes you, and the multiplayer maps added to play with up to 16 of your friends in a LAN is just another bonus. You can play classic frag fest, or capture the flag, a-la TFC. Halo also includes the use of the vehicles in Halo's campaign mode to mix it up even more. Hehe, you have to try what I call "bumper cars" with the two Warthogs supplied in many of the levels. I've never had so much fun crashing into other people.
Halo is one of those games that will change gaming forever. Everything comes together very nicely to keep you in the edge of your seat up until the end of the game. You will not be able to put down Halo, that's just how addicting the game is. It truly makes me happy to know that there are developers out there who still know that gamers want demanding, smart games. Just like how I came to the conclusion that Halo is the best game ever created, if you sit down and play Halo, you will too.

End of transmission, Master Chief!
