Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid...

Activision took the X365 team aside from the long lines of Doom 3 hopefuls and allowed us to experience our very own session inside the opening level of Doom 3. Now before I begin, and before you all call me a wuss, I must explain the physical conditions of the demo...

If you have ever been to E3, you will know that it is an audio and video-fest. The video screens are bigger than skyscrapers, and the bass from the audio rattles your spine. Your senses are driven hard for about 30 minutes, after which the soundtracks and soundeffects begin to merge into one-another, and one EA video becomes another... You lose sense of reality and simply "dumb-up".

With all of the above in mind, Activision thought it would be hilarious to send the Doom 3 inductee's (Chad, Shane and Myself) into the darkest room you could possibly imagine. The only light was coming from 4 plasma screens, hooked up and running the fabled Doom 3...

With no happy "Welcome to Activision" intros, we were simply told to put on a sweet pair of noise-cancelling earphones and frag away. Having endured two days of billion-watt noise (thanks to Namco and Ubisoft etc) I now found myself in a pitch-black room, playing a creepy looking game in utter silence!

Then the moans began... Not the soft, sensual moans we all dream about, but the dark, mutilated moans of creatures that are not quite dead, and not quite alive. Armed with just a pistol, I walked around the control room, searching for a key.

Here's what I learned:

Don't go into dark corners if you don't have a flash-light.
Don't follow your ears and go where the noises are coming from.
Shoot anything that moves.
When you pull the trigger, don't stop until you hear Click. Click

I'm not normally a fan of headphones, but the ambient noises and sound effects in Doom 3 are absolutley freaking incredible. The monsters that came at me were visually scary and audibly terrifying and they didn't seem to stop coming at me until I'd put plenty of lead into them.

Hello Shotgun
We only managed to play Doom 3 for 10-15 mins, however the gameplay was silky-smooth and I didn't suffer from any motion sickness (Ok, so I am a wuss) which is a major plus for me - I nearly hurled after checking out PSI-Ops from Midway.

Weapons used in this short time-frame included the old Fisticuffs, Pistol, Machine Gun, Frag Grenades and of course, the mighty Shotgun. Laying waste to monsters with the shotgun is very satisfying, the bodies seemed to explode upon impact and for the most part, when I was aiming in the right direction, seemed to kill eveything that moved in a single shot.

Ambience
Ok, so I waxed poetic regarding the Activision stand (or was it a Cell?) for Doom 3. The rooms inside the game were dark and scary - remember the first time you watched Alien or Aliens? You get that same "please, can someone just turn on the freaking light" feeling inside Doom 3, it's a scary space station you find yourself on, and someone turned hit the power for the lights...

In space, no one can hear you scream...

  XBOX365 Says
Doom 3 is going to rock when it is launched later this year, I can only see UT beating it in the 3rd Party ratings. Of course, Halo 2 will own, but I still forsee Doom 3 flying up the charts and making mucho dollars!

The other thing about the demo was that the sound was so loud (coming through the headphones) that you couldn't hear youself shout "Holy Shit!!!!" when a bad-dude came at you. The guys from Activision (and Step-2) no doubt laughed themselves silly at our antics.

Doom 3 looks great, I hope it holds a candle to the PC version though! Is it still being developed by ID (the pc version is)? or is some lame-ass developer picking up the rights?

I was worried that there might be repetitive enemies do to a lack of veriaty, is this true ? or did you find it to be robust with different types of enemies to kill ? Were you playig a co-op or were all of you playing in single player mode ? Was this the Xbox version or the PC version ? Have you seen a compairson Between the two versions in motion ? And if so, which looked better and in what way ?

IGN said that it looked good, but not as "drop-dead gorgeous" as the PC version. Is the Xbox becoming Xcretment?
