Close Combat: First to Fight |

Close Combat: First to Fight is an authentic, team-based first-person shooter created under the direction of active-duty United States Marines fresh from the front lines of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Together with the United States Marine Corps and Atomic Games, Destineer is creating First to Fight as a training simulation for use by the Marine Corps and will make it available to consumers in the Fall of 2004 for Xbox.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Sharp of the United States Marine Corps, "Marines from the First Marine Expeditionary Force have been working closely with Destineer and Atomic throughout development to ensure as much realism as possible in these games." Peter Tamte, Destineer's president adds, "There is no guesswork on how to make the games realistic since we are developing First to Fight and Red Phoenix with significant input from Marines who, just weeks before, were being shot at in Iraq and Afghanistan. "
In Close Combat: First to Fight, gamers will lead a four-man fireteam of US Marines through the perils of authentic, modern urban combat in a Middle-Eastern urban battleground. First to Fight is brought to life by a visually advanced 3D engine created from the ground up by Destineer. This engine, filled with next-generation features like volumetric shadows, normal maps, natural skin lighting and specularity, promises to give players a first-hand look at the chaos and terror of modern urban combat.

The Marine Corps. is the United States' only forward deployed military force. They leap across land and water in an effort to shock an enemy into submission. The Marines are the razor sharp tip of America's military spear. These men have volunteered to pay the ultimate price to defend a set of values. They live their life by the code of honor, courage and commitment. It is difficult to become a United States Marine. Most years, 9 out of 10 applicants to the corps are rejected. Those who make it, will push both their body and their minds to the absolute limit. The Marine is a smart and tough warrior. Marines are symbols not just of military might, but of the highest ethical standards. They are the best America has to offer. Close Combat: First to Fight is the closest that you can get on an Xbox or PC to becoming a Marine Corps. Fire Team Leader in modern urban combat.
Features- Bleeding-edge graphics engine delivers amazingly realistic graphics, facial animations, volumetric real-time shadows, dynamic lighting and more
- In-game psychology model makes AIs behave as though they were humans with wills of their own
- Developed in conjunction with the US Marine Corps
- Use authentic Marine urban military doctrine (Ready-Team-Fire-Assist): governs how marines maneuver through urban environments
- Use the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) to destroy enemies: call for fire and support from Cobra helicopters, mortar, other fireteams, tanks, AAVs
- Use true military tactics to defeat enemies: lay suppressing fire, flank enemies, separate leaders from enemies, etc.
RTFA
How a fireteam moves and covers fire sectors is essential to surviving urban combat.
The Marine Corps has developed a system of formations, movement, and tactics for urban environments called "Ready-Team-Fire-Assist." "Ready-Team-Fire-Assist" refers to the positions of each member of a Marine fireteam. - The man in the "Ready" position is your Rifleman.
- He stands next to you, the Team leader.
- On the other side of the hallway is the man in the "Fire" position, who is your SAW gunner.
- Behind him is the Assistant Gunner, the man in the "Assist" position. He provides the team's rear security.
Each man in Ready-Team-Fire-Assist has specific responsibilities that vary based on the environment. For example, in an intersection you will see that the Ready man and the Fire man both hug the corners to cover against enemy fire from the crossing corridors.

Covering all fire sectors during movement is central to Ready-Team-Fire-Assist.
As you play the game you will not need to worry about what your fireteam is doing because they are always following the Marines' Ready-Team-Fire-Assist procedures.
Fireteams in most military shooters don't actually follow any true military doctrine.
In contrast, ALL of the movements, tactics, and formations found in First to Fight have been communicated to Destineer directly by Marine fireteam leaders back from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
AI
Rather than standing in the open, your fireteam automatically uses cover in the environment to their advantage. Throughout a firefight, your fireteam will advance against the enemy and find additional angles of fire. If one Marine is pinned, the other Marines automatically move to protect him. You don't tell your Marines to do this. Just as in live combat, they do it automatically.
There will be times when you may wish to direct members of your team to a specific location. At any time, you can point to a location, push the GoTo button, and the Marines will automatically move to this location. However, sending men through exposed terrain without a supporting element is likely to get them killed.

The preferred technique for movement is to use bounding. When you issue a GoTo command in First to Fight, your men automatically alternate between a movement element and a "watch over" element, moving from cover to cover as much as possible. Just as in real life, this is a far safer way to move your team.
URBAN ENVIRONMENT- First to Fight is about the perils of close-quarters urban combat.
- Marines refer to urban environments as "4D terrain."
- Enemies can attack you on the street, from tunnels below you, from inside buildings above the street level, and up in the air from rooftops.
- Add in the presence of civilians and media, and you have an environment that's very dangerous for an attacking force.
PSYCHOLOGY MODEL
Marines believe the driving force of all action in war is the human will. - How men react psychologically to danger, fear and the extreme violence of war is war's most basic ingredient.
- This ingredient has been missing from every military shooter.
In contrast, the actions of every friendly and enemy character in First to Fight are based on a psychology model. This gives you a whole new weapon in your fight.- Now, you can actually break your enemy's will.
- For example, you can cause enemies to flee from positions through effective flanking, and you can cause confusion by separating enemies from their leader.
MAGTF
A Marine is never alone. - He has the full power of the MAGTF (Marine Air Ground Task Force) to back him up.
- Players in First to Fight can Call for Support from tanks, Armored Assault Vehicles and other Marine fireteams.
- They can also Call for Fire from mortar or Cobra helicopters.
Ready-Team-Fire-Assist, Combined Arms Effect, Flanking, Suppressing Fire, forcing changes in the Human Will, and the power of the MAGTF are all integral parts of how Marines fight battles. And, they're part of what makes playing First to Fight different than playing any other military shooter.
The next in the series, Close Combat: Red Phoenix, is a realistic real-time strategy game set on the challenging terrains of today's Korean peninsula. Loosely based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Larry Bond, Red Phoenix puts players in command of a reinforced rifle platoon of U.S. Marines or South Korean soldiers fighting against an invasion by North Korea in 2006. Red Phoenix is scheduled for worldwide release in early 2005.
The original Close Combat series, released between 1996 and 2000, merged realistic warfare with modern technology. Created by Atomic Games and originally published by Microsoft, the result was a groundbreaking game series that went on to win dozens of military strategy game awards, as well as being named by PC Gamer as one of "The 50 Best Games Ever" in October, 1998.

If this game can deliver the same level of CNN inmersiveness of FSW,then it's GotY right there. FSW is awesome, but it left me with an awful case of itchy trigger finger....

The Marines are not the best America has to offer. The Navy Seals are.

I read that we are getting the same exact version of the game that the Marines are getting. Only their version won't allow for ANY casulties at all.

I think I'm gonna like this game much better than Full Spectrum Warrior. This game not only lets you control your own guy, as opposed to just commanding them in FSW, but it's team based like Rainbow Six 3. The AI supposedly uses real Marine tactics as well. I wonder if the Military gets any money for these games being it's designed first & foremost for them, or it's all the devs and pubs money.

I just do not think that this game can beat the high standards set for by FSW.
