BMX XXX

Well, I finally have BMX XXX in my hands. At long lost I get to see what all of the ruckus is about; to see if pixel-boobies can actually be sexy (I'll save the suspense: Not in this game); to see the Score's girls in all of their glory (yes, they can be sexy). Oh yes, there is a BMX game attached to this somewhere, too. To Acclaim’s credit, the central theme of the game is still freestyle BMX riding, there are just a ton of distracting extras that try to hide that fact.

There are only three modes that you can play this game in. The first is single player Hardcore Tour career mode, which is a step-by-step task completion through the various levels. The tasks allow you to interact with the various characters set around town. One of the first tasks you will need to complete involves taking a group of neighborhood ho's to their pimp. Good times indeed. Most of the characters have some sort of inappropriate thing to say to you, or just in general. The first time through it is pretty funny, but the 15th time you pass the hotdog vendor and hear the same wiener joke you should be ready to shove his umbrella stand straight up his... Anyway, these characters also provide you with information necessary to complete the various tasks. At the end of each level is the grand prize of video clips of the girls from Scores. These are real footage of actual dancers at Scores, with real nudity and real boobies in some of them. However, the clips are more PG-13 or R than XXX. For those of you who have been to an actual strip club, what you see is what you get in about 15 seconds of the first song at a club. Nothing spectacular, but it is naked chicks, so I'm not complaining.

The controls feel really loose when you are riding. It’s missing that feeling of gravity actually existing in the game. This is a prime example of where Mat Hoffman Pro BMX 2 distances itself as the premier BMX game on Xbox. There were times I was playing BMX XXX and I had the feeling that I was ice skating, not on a BMX bike. If you have played the previous releases by Acclaim, you will probably be okay with it, but if you are coming from Mat Hoffman, I have a feeling this will be bothersome for sure.

An area that has remained consistent throughout the game formally known as Dave Mirra is the depth of tricks available. One glance at the trick list and you realize that there are enough tricks to keep you occupied for some time, but a lot of them are simple variations of the same move. The Dave Mirra franchise was never accused of having an abundance of realism when doing combos and that remains true in BMX XXX. You can still pull off the tabletop, tabletop, tabletop, tabletop, tabletop, tabletop six move combo and rack up the points, but a tiny bit of realism would have been nice.

Another frustrating aspect of the game is the lack of explanation for some of the tasks that you are assigned. During game play, one of these eccentric, idiosyncratic characters convey some sort of challenge that you must accomplish, but they fail to explain what the hell they are talking about. You get no overview of the area in question; you just have to traverse the terrain and figure out where you are supposed to go. And the slang they use isn’t necessarily anything you would be familiar with unless you hang out at the Vans Skate Park and go to the X-Games every year, which can also make completing tasks more frustrating.

There are a few multi-player modes that can be fun. There is the requisite high score competition; the highest combo contest, which, if you win, strips your counterpart down to their skivvies; and the really weird one. The really weird one has the following scenario: one player rides around collecting stereos, the other has an arsenal of weapons with which he or she attempt to blow the other rider to kingdom come. Now that is BMX’ing! Actually, it can be fun to play the aforementioned mode with your friends, but it doesn’t really have any lasting appeal.

BMX XXX does have a really nice soundtrack, including 80’s hair band icons Motley Crue singing “Girls, Girls, Girls”. If you aren’t as old as me, there is support for a custom soundtrack.

This game does not push the envelope the way I had hoped. It is not a new genre, forging the path to the future of adult oriented gaming. It's Jackass on BMX bikes with hooters thrown in. It’s not a horrible game, just a little disappointing. If you want to get the complete picture (i.e. see naked chicks) I would suggest downloading the cheat codes, renting it and having fun. There are some positives, but outside of the nakedness and comedy, this game doesn’t improve significantly on the BMX aspect of Dave Mirra 2.
